Using the Nexus 7: The Kindle Fire's got something to fear

1 day

Google's Nexus 7 is a strange device. At 7?inches, it's smaller than an iPad ??and a breadbox, for that matter ??and with its impressive spec list, it's a bit more appealing than the similarly low-priced Kindle Fire. But how does it hold up in person?

Surprisingly well.

While?I cringe when I cradle the Kindle Fire's clunky body,?the Nexus 7 feels perfectly balanced and secure in my hand. It's a solid device?? the unit I'm using survived several awkward drops off a table's edge ? and it looks sleek.

On the inside, the Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor, a twelve-core GPU and 1 GB of RAM. Between that hardware and Project Butter???under-the-hood improvements which keep?Jelly Bean running particularly?smoothly?? the tablet's pretty darn speedy. (For more about Jelly Bean, check out?our rundown of its best features.)

When Google announced the Nexus 7, it pushed its content consumption features ? especially?a widget which collects books, magazines, TV shows, movies and music. It's an appealing tool and, like most things on the Nexus 7, it is consistently smooth and brisk.

I've only used the Nexus 7 for a couple of days now, but I already dread returning home and reaching for a Kindle Fire. I know that it'll feel slow, clunky, and unsatisfying in comparison.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Rob Bromee | My Brain Cancer Diary

Picture this: Two condemned men at ease together, Rob and I, in vinyl recliners at the MCCM treatment center. We met there after connecting through my blog. () Despite broken speech and memory lapses from an inoperable brain tumor, he wore a warm and hopeful smile.

He gave me a chance to be his friend, asking only that I listen. He searched for words and struggled to maintain his attention, but I saw he was determined to express his thoughts. I wanted to show him that I would wait for him to find his words, that I would face him attentively, and calmly, and just listen.

?What kind of music do you like??, he asked me. I mentioned an excellent compilation of piano jazz my father-in-law had given me. He was curious. He said he was a huge Phish fan. ()

I said ?I saw them in Portland, at the Civic Center, on New Year?s Eve, ?93. Aquarium Tour.? I was 18 years old then.

Sometimes Rob would begin to speak, stammer, bear down, pause, then give up with a shrug of his one good shoulder or a shake of his head. Sometimes our pauses circled yawning gulfs of time. Sometimes he regained himself, sometimes he didn?t.

A few days later, Rob and his family (wife Kasey, eight-year-old son and five-year-old daughter) joined us at home for a pizza dinner. Rob shuffled up to the door. His bad hand was in a brace.

Our boys played, their mothers followed, laughing, and made a jolly scene, but Rob seemed depressed as we held down the couch. One of our cats stepped into his lap, sniffed, sampled Rob?s caresses and moved on without a backward glance. Fickle cats! Fickle fate.

I wanted desperately to give Rob hope. I put on the jazz CDs I had told him about, then anxiously steered our conversation. Had he considered physical therapy? His insurance would pay for it, why not try it? He could feel better, gain strength, live a little longer. Use it or lose it, right?

But I pushed us too close to ends he feared to consider, and he pulled back, saying he preferred not to speak of it. We let it go, let it drown in the music. Finally, he seemed not to relent but commit to the effort, saying with his soft, stumbling voice that, yes, he would try it.

That?s the last I heard of it.

A few weeks later, Rob asked me to visit him. I found him slouched in a well-worn armchair on the sun-porch of his home in Cape Elizabeth. This was his last redoubt. Once a computer wiz and guitar hero, he?d given up selling his old instruments on eBay, stopped blogging or even using his computer, his iPad, or his iPhone.

The tiny, sparely finished room only had space for two chairs. I put on a jazz CD, brought each of us a soda from the kitchen and settled next to Rob. The strong April sun poured in, with a trace of the cold April wind. Forsythia bloomed. Cats prowled the neighborhood and squirrels foraged warily.

I was surprised to see a wheelchair folded up in the corner, and to see it had only tiny wheels. Anyway, I supposed he wouldn?t have the strength or coordination to push it himself. Such did each day diminish his body.

Did he want to go for a ride? Yes. We rolled up the street. We passed a yard where Rob?s son was playing with a friend. Rob smiled and waved. His son smiled and waved. ?Hi Dad!? he shouted. And on we all went, not missing a beat.

But I was shaken, and a fear was cast out, that I would disgust and embarrass my own son, when the time came. Suddenly I saw our bond steeled against this withering of mere flesh. Rob was not the lawn-mowing, catch-playing All-American anchor of the family. Not anymore. Norman Rockwell never painted a Rob. No matter.

I never knew the old Rob, the vital, frenetic, hard-rocking and adventurous Rob. I was blind to the scope of his decline, and I think he liked that about me. No ghost of ?the Rob we knew? would haunt us. We both wanted, I think, to be normal for a while. We devote so much to coping with our treatments and our disabilities, it?s easy to forget we share in the amusements and annoyances of everyday life. The weather. Bugs. Bad drivers.

When we talked, those are the types of things we talked about: arguably vacuous, certainly forgettable. It was not the words but the sound of the conversation that soothed us. We were, for a few hours, just a couple of prototypical old geezers just watching the world go by. We escaped the ubiquitous signals of our approaching doom. We escaped time.

Continuing our journey, we rolled through the neighborhood to a nursing home. Benches and tables were set out but empty. There were no signs of life, but granite stones celebrated the 100th birthdays of a fortunate few. Wouldn?t that be a treat? Turning back I guided us through an empty quarter of the parking lot, riding the back of the chair as if it were a grocery cart. Then I pulled the front wheels off the ground and balanced Rob?s weight on the rear wheels. For a second I felt like a 12-year-old boy again, somehow bored and adventurous and free and powerless all at the same time, trying to find a place where I belong.

The next time I saw Rob was at the hospice. On the prognostic scale of function vs. time to live, he probably had 3-4 weeks. I know he recognized me. His smile, again, was genuinely warm and joyful. But his eyes were losing their grip, blunted and soft. I brought out my iPhone and played the jazz again, the jazz I knew he liked.

I pulled a chair up to Rob?s bed and swiped through pictures on my iPhone. I could see he was looking at them. I hoped the sound of my voice would recall a pleasant feeling.

Then Kasey arrived with two friends who wore the anxious, slightly overwhelmed look of people struggling to say the right things to a dying person. It was not amusing, exactly, but I felt at ease. I might have counseled them, by imagining myself in Rob?s place, to spare their determined cheer. No ?shot in the arm? could save him now. If it were me dying, I?d rather be a fly on the wall. Please, Talk amongst yourselves. Try to recapture the meaningless drivel that once filled deliciously ordinary days. Slump into boredom. Pick nits. Complain. Let me die to the sounds of you being you.

When they came, I left. Turning at the door, I looked to Rob and he looked back. The warm smile, the thumbs-up, genuine, brilliant.

A week or so later I learned that Rob was upset, in pain, and incoherent. He had only a few days to live. My wife and I went to the hospice to visit him, but he was asleep. Kasey and her mother were keeping a vigil of his final hours. He would not awaken.

I didn?t know what to say. Kasey was firmly anchored at Rob?s side, tearful but composed. Rob snored. Rob was gone. We were no longer alone together, just alone. The ease I had felt in being with Rob evaporated. I couldn?t be there for him, and suddenly I felt I had no other reason to be there.

I sat quietly, gazing at a cork board of family photographs. One caught my eye, from his wedding. Rob was so clearly the star of the photograph. He seemed to wrap the whole family in his arms, head above the rest, lighting the Earth with his smile: parents on one side; in-laws on the other; Kasey under his wing.

I?ve often wondered what becomes of these pictures of our lives. When you smile for the camera, do you imagine what surge of fondness, what heartbreak your face might conjure in those who outlive your fate?

Relig Twitter Response to Health Care Decision

As NAACP President Ben Jealous?told?the?Times last week, ?it?s become clear that, just as Bayard Rustin admonished us all, that we would either stand together or die apart.?

"Who?admonished us?? readers must have asked. Bayard Rustin?s role as advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and as organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (where King delivered his ?I Have a Dream? speech) should have assured his place in American social and political history.?But Rustin has long been denied his proper place?largely because he was an openly gay man.

Fitmarks: Calories and weight loss simplified

Underestimating calories is the number one problem for most people who claim to not be able to lose weight, despite following what they consider to be a "healthy" diet.

I have lost count of the number of times someone has asked me what else they can do to kick start? the weight loss. They have started off their new health regime with exercise three times a week, cut out the alcohol and junk food (apart from weekends of course!!). They then weigh themselves weekly and the scales don't budge.? This goes on for a few weeks and they begin to wonder if they have something wrong with them.? Thyroids, big bones, genes (my parents were overweight), leptin levels, stress, metabolic disorders even fat viruses have all had the finger pointed at them at some point .

Its funny how we don't release the fat virus into starving villages in third world countries, surely that would solve the problems there? Or maybe a bowl of rice and some muddy water every few days is eating "under maintenance"

you're best option for guaranteed weight loss is to start making a food diary and add up all the calories.? Do this over seven days, then add up the total calories for the week and divide by seven to get your daily calorie intake..? Try this free calorie counter? and food log http://www.foodfocus.co.uk/index.php .? Be strict with yourself here; it's only you who needs to know and ultimately will benefit most.

If your weight is staying the same week after week the calories you are consuming are at a maintenance level.? You will continue spinning your wheels or just give up altogether out of frustration and clothes shopping will become more and more of a nightmare.

Lets keep things simple. Simply reduce your calories by just 200 a day.? That's all. If your weight has been creeping up? then try cutting out 500 calories, if that doesn't work keep cutting back by 200 until things turn around. And they will do. The weight will slowly come down and your weighing sessions will be something to look forward to and be proud of!

US durable goods rose 1.1 percent in May

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. factories received more orders for long-lasting manufactured goods in May, rebounding after two weak months. But the trend in orders has slowed this year, adding to worries that the U.S. economy has weakened.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that orders for durable goods rose 1.1 percent in May after two months of declines.

And so-called core capital goods, which signal business investment plans, increased 1.6 percent. That also followed two months of declines, which raised concerns that businesses were losing confidence in the economy. Companies ordered more heavy machinery, computers and communication equipment in May.

Durable goods are items that are expected to last at least three years. Orders can be volatile from month to month.

"All in, the improvement in May is, again, a relief," said Jennifer Lee, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets. "However, smoothing out the monthly wiggles in core orders shows a decelerating trend.... In other words, continued uncertainty over Europe's debt crisis and the fiscal problems in the U.S. are still hurting business and consumer confidence, and suggests only modest growth as we enter the second half of 2012."

In May, orders rose to $217.2 billion, 46 percent above the recession low hit in April 2009. Orders are still 11.4 percent below their 2007 peak.

U.S. manufacturing has been a key driver of growth since the recession ended three years ago. But Europe's debt crisis has weakened demand for U.S. exports. And several other reports suggest the factory activity has slowed.

Factories produced less in May than April, the Federal Reserve said earlier this month. Automakers cut back on output for the first time in six months.

In June, manufacturing activity barely grew in the New York region and contracted sharply in the Philadelphia area, according to surveys by regional Federal Reserve banks.

The May durable goods report showed orders for transportation products increased 2.7 percent, led by a 4.9 percent gain in volatile demand for commercial aircraft. Orders for motor vehicles and parts rose 0.5 percent following a 5.7 percent surge in April.

Excluding transportation, durable goods orders rose 0.4 percent.

Demand for machinery rose 4.1 percent. Orders for computers and related products were up 3.3 percent and orders for communications equipment increased 2.3 percent. Orders for primary metals such as steel fell 1.5 percent.

Manufacturers added 12,000 jobs in May, the eighth straight gain. But overall, the economy generated just 69,000 jobs last month, the fewest jobs in a year.

Employers have added an average of just 73,000 jobs a month in April and May. That followed average gains of 226,000 a month in the first three months of the year.

With job growth weaker and the unemployment rate still high, consumers have pulled back on spending and businesses appear less confident about the economy. They are placing fewer orders at factories, which has slowed manufacturing output.

Turkey to help 'liberate the Syrians from dictatorship'

Cem Ozdel / EPA

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan addresses members of parliament from his ruling AK Party during a meeting at the Turkish parliament in Ankara, Turkey, on Tuesday.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

Turkey?s prime minister said Tuesday that his country would offer all possible support ?to liberate the Syrians from dictatorship,? as NATO condemned Syria for shooting down a Turkey military jet.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey ? a member of NATO ??had changed the rule of engagement for its military and would now respond to any violation of the Syrian border.

Turkey would not engage in war-mongering, but the attack on the reconnaissance jet, which was deliberately targeted, would not be left unanswered, Erdogan said in a speech to his ruling AK Party deputies in parliament.

?However valuable Turkey's friendship is, its wrath is just as strong. Don't take our common sense and cautious approach as a sign of passivity,? Erdogan said, according to Turkish newspaper Zaman.

?The Syrian administration is tyrannical and not just. Turkey will be in solidarity with our brothers in Syria until a new regime is in place,? he added. ?Turkey will be in solidarity with our brothers in Syria until a new regime arrives.?

?We will offer all the possible support to liberate the Syrians from dictatorship,? Erdogan said.

Turkish border a crucial link in Syrian conflict?

Meanwhile, ambassadors of NATO's 28 member states met in Brussels on Tuesday to consult with Turkey on the incident after it called for the meeting.

Turkey seeks NATO action over Syria jet downing

"NATO allies have expressed strong condemnation of this completely unacceptable act," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said after the gathering.

Report: Syrian general, dozens of other soldiers defect to Turkey

Rasmussen said NATO security was "indivisible", but he said NATO's Article 5 -- which calls for member states to see an attack on one country as an attack on all the alliance's members -- had not been discussed.

"We stand together with Turkey in spirit of solidarity," he said.

Suspected gas blast destroys homes, kills child

?

One child was killed after blast that ripped through homes outside of Manchester. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

By msnbc.com staff

An explosion in England left at least one child dead after five terraced houses were destroyed in a suspected gas blast.

Firefighters continue searching through the rubble in Manchester for anyone who might be trapped. One man was taken to the hospital with severe burns, BBC reported.

"It's like a war zone - tiles that have blown off literally across the streets, there's just debris everywhere. It's mad," Alex Perkins, who lives nearby, told BBC. "It's just empty, there's nothing there, just bricks on the floor, just rubble."

Georgian Ulla, who also lives on the street, told the BBC her house "shook like it was an earthquake."

"All the lights shook - I thought someone was breaking in to begin with," she added. "First thing that I saw was all the toys on the floor. Apparently there are kids that live in the house."

The explosion was felt half a mile away, and shock waves broke windows, set off car alarms and littered the area with fragments of roof slates. At least 100 homes were evacuated, and 30 firefighters were on the scene.

Craig Needham, who runs a nearby garage, told the BBC that he and his employees ran outside when they heard the blast.

"We could just see a black plume. We thought a bomb had dropped," he said.

First-Rate Travel Insurance

Post complete requirements. Requirements range depending on the insurance organization. However, most insurers will need applicants to make an application form as well as medical stories that examine in detail the individual?s medical conditions. This may also be essential to submit an itemized form as well as letter from the applicant?s health practitioner. It is vital that you submit full requirements. Imperfect documents may result in the wait or rejection of your insurance request.

Great Moments in Google Auto-Complete

As you've surely seen countless times, Google's auto-complete feature fills in what it thinks you might be searching for when you start to type a query.

Most of the time, especially if you enter more than 2-3 words, this can be fast, helpful and surprisingly accurate. Sometimes, though, it's just hilarious.

Take this example. When you simply type "Is", the search engine suggests five apparently common searches, and five great questions of our time:

Google 1

Behold, a snapshot into the mind of America's search engine subconscious.

Is the Mitt Romney campaign getting nervous? Really? No clue why it would be right now, as President Obama looks shaky as ever. Nervous in that he might blow it?

Only slightly less on the mind of Google users is whether or not Comedy Central star Daniel Tosh is homosexual. Definitely a profound topic of debate.

Snooki, pneumonia contagiousness and Twitter crashing round out this amazing top five. Twitter really does go down a lot for a site of its stature.

Follow the jump for more great Google auto-complete results:

Is it a boy or a girl? Who knew Google was an ultrasound tech!

The long and short of it: People are rather obsessed with all things gay and medical, and incapable of looking out the window to see if it's raining right now.

Finally, the time-honored, philosophical questions of whether God and/or vampires really exist remain unanswered. The Vampire Diaries isn't proof enough??

DarksydePhil

DarksydePhil and I have crossed paths many times throughout my history of conventions, and it was a pleasure to sit down for a few minutes and chat with him. Phil, also known as The King of Hate,? is actually a really nice guy who, on top of making countless amounts of contributions to the gaming world via his DSPGaming Youtube channel, also happens to be an appreciator of gaming artwork. If you?re a fan of his videos, then you?ve undoubtedly noticed the plethora of video game artwork that adorns his condo, some of which were made by RGN?s own Squarepainter and yours truly, Pixxel Papa.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with his works, you may be asking what makes DarksydePhil such an awesome guy. Well, for starters, he?s kind of living the gamer dream?

DarksydePhil King of Hate

The King of Hate indeed?

How is Phil living the gamer?s dream, you ask? This is a man who took doing game reviews for all of the newer games out there on Playstation 3 and XBOX 360 and posting them on Youtube, and turned it into a full-time job. Although he was originally known for his expertise in the Street Fighter games, Phil began posting his video game playthroughs online for all the world to see, and soon caught the eye of gaming giant, Machinima. Their partnership blossomed, and soon after, Phil really began to make a name for himself, and turned the potential of doing game reviews as a job, into a reality.

Today, DarksydePhil?s Youtube channel has over 110,000 subscribers and over 175,000,000 views. Within less than 2 years, Phil went from being a man who got shafted by unemployment, to a man who makes a living doing game reviews, and all in all, doing something that he loves. I asked him about what it was like to go through such an amazing experience like that, and a number of other things such as his experiences with the gaming community, his love for video game art, and his future plans.

This is a true example of a gamer?s success story, and I look forward to catching up with Phil at future events.

Odd alien planets have super-close encounters

It is science fiction made fact: Astronomers have discovered two alien planets around the same star whose orbits come so close together that each rises in the night sky of its sister world like an exotic full moon.

The newfound planets are 1,200 light-years from Earth, researchers said. They differ greatly in size and composition, but come within just 1.2 million miles (1.9 million kilometers) of each other, closer than any other pair of planets known, according to a new study.

One of the newly discovered alien planets, called Kepler-36b, appears to be a rocky "super-Earth" 4.5 times as massive as our planet. The other, Kepler-36c, is a gaseous, Neptune-size world about eight times as massive as Earth. The two planets meet up every 97 days in a conjunction that would make each dramatically visible in the other's sky.

    4. Scientists analyze water ice in moon crater

?These two worlds are having close encounters,? Josh Carter of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, a lead author of research published online Thursday by the journal Science, said in a statement.

At their closest approach, the two planets are separated by five times the distance between Earth and the moon. How such different bodies ended up in such similar orbits may be tough for current theories of planet formation and migration to explain, researchers said.

"This is unprecedented," Eric Agol of the University of Washington, another lead author, told Space.com via email. "They are as different in density as Earth and Saturn (the highest and lowest density planets in our solar system), yet they are 30 times closer than any pair of planets in our solar system." [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]

Strange neighbors
The two known planets in the Kepler-36 system ? which is located in the constellation Cygnus the Swan ? were detected by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope.

Kepler is staring continuously at more than 150,000 stars, watching for telltale brightness dips caused when planets cross in front of the stars from the telescope's perspective. Since its March 2009 launch, Kepler has flagged more than 2,300 potential alien planets; while only a small fraction have been confirmed to date, mission scientists think more than 80 percent of them will end up being the real deal.

Kepler-36c, which is about 3.7 times wider than Earth, likely has a rocky core surrounded by a substantial atmosphere filled with lots of hydrogen and helium, researchers said.

Kepler-36b, on the other hand, is a super-Earth just 1.5 times wider than our planet. Iron likely constitutes about 30 percent of its mass, water around 15 percent and atmospheric hydrogen and helium less than 1 percent, researchers said.

Though they're very different in size and makeup, the two planets travel on surprisingly similar paths around their host star. Kepler-36c orbits once every 16 days, at an average distance of 12 million miles (19 million kilometers). Kepler-36b orbits each 14 days and sits about 11 million miles (18 million kilometers) from the star.

Kepler-36b probably formed relatively close to the star, while Kepler-36c likely took shape farther out. Astronomers model large-scale migrations that can bring initially far-flung planets much closer together, but the peculiar Kepler-36 system may force some refinements, researchers said.

"These models rely on assumptions that will likely have to be 'tweaked' or refined to account for both b and c's proximity and compositional differences," Carter told Space.com via email. "The existence of Kepler-36 may help clarify or invalidate these assumptions."

Both planets are likely too hot to support life as we know it, with Kepler-36b probably sporting lava flows on its surface. They orbit roughly three times closer to their host star, known as Kepler-36a, than the hellishly hot planet Mercury does to our sun. And Kepler-36a is likely a bit hotter than our star, researchers said.

An impressive sky scene
Every 97 days, Kepler-36b and c experience a conjunction that brings them within just 1.2 million miles (1.9 million kilometers) of each other ? roughly five times the Earth-moon distance. This would be quite a sight for an observer on the surface of either planet.

"Planet c would appear roughly 2.5 times the size of the full moon when viewed from the surface of planet b. Conversely, planet b would appear about the size of the full moon on planet c," Carter said.

"We can speculate on the appearance of planet c: It may appear slightly more purple that Neptune," he added. "The purple hue owes to absorption of red and yellow by sodium and potassium. There could also be a slight brown tint owing to hazes of photo-disassociated methane."

Such dramatic vistas could well be around for many years to come, researchers said, for the orbits of Kepler-36b and c appear unlikely to change anytime soon.

"We are addressing this in a follow-up paper, but the short answer is that yes, these do appear to be stable on a long timescale," Agol said.

Gadgets that save you from yourself

Featured

8 hrs.

Are you your own worst enemy? If so, the following gadgets might be able to help you overcome some?relatively minor shortcomings. That is to say, if you're reading this while wearing a fake mustache while frantically trying to make your way to the border,? sorry???but you've probably got bigger problems to tackle.

Ben & Jerry's pint lock

While technically designed to prevent others from stealing your ice cream, the Ben & Jerry's pint lock or "Euphori-Lock" can serve as a dietary deterrent as well. You probably won't remember the combination, and that means trying to find where you wrote it down. Then you have to enter in the combination itself. Way too many steps???though I might not be above cracking the pint open like a coconut and going in face first like a starving castaway.? $6.64???Ben&Jerry's via That's Nerdalicious

Beer Tracker bottle opener
Every time you open a beer, the Beer Tracker bottle opener will record it digitally. Hopefully, the reality of how many beers you've had will prevent awkward moments?? such as?waking up to find you have 50 Facebook messages with comments like, "The video we made of you last night is blowing up YouTube!" $10???FredFlare

A bed that makes itself
We aren't at a point where machines can completely overcome your tendency to make a mess, but a bed that can make itself is a good place to start. The OHEA Smart Bed can do just that in 50 seconds using a system of mechanical arms, cords and rollers. Granted, you'll have to be a pretty calm sleeper in order for it to work because it won't be able to handle a tangle of sheets tossed about in the night. If that sounds doable, the OHEA Smart Bed is expected to go on sale soon.???OHEA

iPhone Tank Case
If you're the kind of person who can't make it through a year without dropping and damaging your iPhone, you might want to consider a rugged case. The Tank Case from Case-Mate offers military-grade protection thanks to a polycarbonate hard shell with silicone cushioned interior and a retractable screen shield. Sure, you might have trouble fitting it?in your pants pockets (or, possibly, your car), but it's worth it for the peace of mind right? $60???Case-Mate

Toxic Waste Cookie Jar
Whenever the lid is opened on the Toxic Waste Cookie Jar, it will alert others to your unsanctioned snacking with flashing lights and an alarm sound. Using the excuse "I only did it because the horrible cookies you made are toxic and I thought they would give me superpowers" won't help. $14.99???Perpetual Kid via That's Nerdalicious

The Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock
Do you have trouble getting up in the morning? Well, that won't be a problem with the Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock. It has a maximum volume of 113 decibels (a jackhammer is around 100). If that isn?t enough, it also includes a bed shaker that you can slip under your mattress. If your heart can survive the shock, you'll always be on time. $49.99???ThinkGeek

HeadsUp
If anything, the HeadsUp sensor system proves that there a very good chance that a product exists to help you overcome just about every minor shortcoming. We've all seen garage sensor gadgets that alert you when you are about to smash into the wall, but the HeadsUp system is designed specifically to protect the expensive stuff you strap to the roof of your car. For example, if you like to go biking, you could attach a couple of waterproof sensors to the bikes, and when you return home the sensors will trigger an in-car alarm and LED sign inside the garage. In other words, it prevents you from entering the garage and smashing up your expensive gear. It's an absolute must for forgetful, outdoorsy types who have trouble with spatial relationships. $169.99???HeadsUp

An innovative new website, bidcycle.com, is preparing to launch an online auction business with a unique twist--it will allow consumers to choose the nonprofits that they support. Today, the company spotlights eight national organizations that have joined its fundraising network.

Online auctions, great deals, new shopping platforms, and giving to those in need are not often mentioned in the same breath. bidcycle.com, a new fundraising website, will change all that when it launches in July.

Featuring the taglines, Bid for Your Cause and The Fastest Auction on the Planet, bidcycle is being created to reinvent the online auction model, which typically uses timers that result in hours (or days) with few or no bids being placed, only to see activity increase dramatically in the final seconds of an auction. The bidcycle platform, in contrast, will offer a limited number of bids in each auction. When the final bid is placed, the auction ?cycles? and the winner is declared.

?We will announce more details when we unveil the site, and consumers will learn that bidcycle represents an entirely new approach to shopping that will be fun, entertaining and rewarding,? states Jeff Parnell, the company?s CEO and an executive with more than 15 years of e-commerce experience. ?Our original founder set out to create an entirely new business model, and we?ve worked hard to build on this objective. Auction winners will save 60 ? 90% off retail prices, and our bidding experience will be truly unique.?

Another key business philosophy is the company?s passion to fund the nonprofit sector. ?Our team feels strongly that nonprofits need and deserve our support, and we incorporate this into our mission by empowering consumers to choose their favorite participating nonprofit each time they bid. Over the past several weeks, we have begun to establish partnerships with a select group of nonprofits that will enable this process to take place.?

One ?bidcycle Beneficiary? (as the company refers to its nonprofit partners) is Rebuild Hope, which helps families of seriously disabled Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. The organization believes that the new partnership will enable its team to assist an even greater number of veterans, caregivers and children. Rebuild Hope?s Founder and President Dana Hendrickson also appreciates bidcycle?s uniqueness, pointing out that "both organizations employ one-of-a-kind service models, leveraging the reach and power of the Web."

Military challenges in the Middle East were also a driver behind USA Cares? decision to align with bidcycle. ?For 10 years now, our nation's military has been involved in (Middle East) missions that have protected us all. Through bidcycle, Americans can easily assist the military and have fun while they do it," shares Loni White, USA Cares Director of Communications.

Honor and Remember is another patriotic organization that has forged an early partnership with bidcycle. The nonprofit pays tribute to the sacrifices paid by our fallen military heroes, through the creation and adoption of a nationally recognized flag of remembrance. Founder George Lutz, who lost a son in the Iraq war, learned through relationships with other families of fallen service members that it was critical to ensure that their sacrifices would be remembered, and he appreciates a new platform to further this process. ?I am pleased to be part of the bidcycle network and look forward to sharing our message in an exciting new venue," he states.

A very different type of nonprofit, Herd Racing Foundation, relies on its unique platform?professional powerboat racing?to provide strong messages of encouragement to the less fortunate. Dana Tomes, who pilots Herd Racing?s boats (named because of the team?s affiliation with the Marshall University Thundering Herd), is also one of the Foundation?s leaders, and his group makes it a point to visit every community in which he races. He looks forward to his bidcycle partnership and the opportunity to reach more of those in need. ?We bring a fun, upbeat message of faith and family, and consider our ministry to be a real privilege.?

The Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation?an innovative group that has received national recognition for its pioneering work to combat one of the world?s most significant medical challenges?is another new Beneficiary and is dedicated to accelerated testing and development of its Kanzius Noninvasive Radiowave Cancer Treatment. Their treatment serves as an alternative to radiation and chemotherapy, which often bring undesirable side effects, and the group?s passion for its work stems from the impact of cancer on our society, a point well stated by Kanzius? Executive Director, Mark Neidig, Sr. ?There?s not a person who hasn?t been affected by cancer, so we are excited to partner with bidcycle to help fund the research of the world?s most promising cancer treatment,? he shares.

From its initial stages, bidcycle?s founding team has believed strongly that the sluggish U.S. economy makes the company?s no-cost fundraising platform even more attractive for many nonprofits, a thought that is shared by VeteransPlus, a Veteran-founded nonprofit whose goal is to provide comprehensive education and understanding of personal financial issues to veterans. ?Now more than ever, we seek meaningful partnerships and bidcycle brings innovation to the idea of supporting each other,? states John Pickens, the organization?s Executive Director.

Parnell is quick to point out that the opportunity to work with a variety of organizations that drive positive change is the most rewarding part of his role. ?Each Beneficiary that we?ve selected is a first class organization which impacts communities across America, and I feel privileged to build these relationships. We carefully review each nonprofit that we consider, and will showcase each organization?s unique mission. Our goal is to become a true fundraising partner, and because the consumer can benefit by participating in our auctions, we view this as win-win.?

The Yellow Ribbon Registry Network, which provides military heroes with a place to seek assistance and locate assistance from nonprofits who are positioned to meet these needs, was one organization that recognized bidcyle?s intentions very quickly. ?We are careful to align ourselves with quality programs and we feel it starts with the people behind the program. That component makes this a worthy partnership,? according to Christopher Fitzpatrick, Yellow Ribbon?s Program Director.

Freedom Is Not Free assists wounded service members and their families, as well as families of the fallen, and is another organization that appreciates bidcycle?s passion. John Winslow, the group?s Executive Director, sums it up nicely when he says, ?Their desire is to give back to nonprofit organizations that support our communities. By tying philanthropy into their business model, bidcycle has created an opportunity to deepen the impact of charities working on some of our country's most critical social issues."
