Noam Gershony won gold for Israel yesterday in wheelchair tennis at the London Paralympics.?

It's too bad more people don't tune into the Paralympics, because they offer really outstanding examples of human triumph ? maybe more so than the heavily commercialized Olympic Games.

Take Noam Gershony, who won gold for Israel yesterday in wheelchair tennis at the London Paralympics. Mr. Gershony, an Apache helicopter pilot, was injured and his co-pilot killed when their craft collided with another helicopter during Israel's 2006 war with Lebanon. After extensive rehabilitation, he took up surfing and wheelchair tennis.
The persistence he displayed in overcoming that ordeal no doubt came in handy during the Paralympic semifinals when he found himself losing to local favorite Jamie Burdekin of Great Britain. As in life, so on the court: He rallied back after the first set to defeat Burdekin ? advancing to the finals, where he bested the top-ranked player in the world, David Wagner of the US.
Gershony says he never expected to win gold at the 2012 Paralympics in London, and his modest, almost bashful smile upon wheeling up to the top of the podium said as much. Only one Israeli has ever won gold at the Olympic Games, windsurfer Gal Fridman in 2004. Gershony's gold, though captured on the less-heralded stage of the Paralympics, was much celebrated in the Israeli media this weekend.?
ASU scientists bring the heat to refine renewable biofuel productionPublic release date: 27-Sep-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

TEMPE, Ariz.-Perhaps inspired by Arizona's blazing summers, Arizona State University scientists have developed a new method that relies on heat to improve the yield and lower the costs of high-energy biofuels production, making renewable energy production more of an everyday reality.
ASU has been at the forefront of algal research for renewable energy production. Since 2007, with support from federal, state and industry funding, ASU has spearheaded several projects that utilize photosynthetic microbes, called cyanobacteria, as a potential new source of renewable, carbon-neutral fuels. Efforts have focused on developing cyanobacteria as a feedstock for biodiesel production, as well as benchtop and large-scale photobioreactors to optimize growth and production.
ASU Biodesign Institute researcher Roy Curtiss, a microbiologist who uses genetic engineering of bacteria to develop new vaccines, has adapted a similar approach to make better biofuel-producing cyanobacteria.
"We keep trying to reach ever deeper into our genetic bag of tricks and optimize bacterial metabolic engineering to develop an economically viable, truly green route for biofuel production," said Roy Curtiss, director of the Biodesign Institute's Centers for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology and Microbial Genetic Engineering as well as professor in the School of Life Sciences.
Cyanobacteria are like plants, dependent upon renewable ingredients including sunlight, carbon dioxide and water that, through genetic engineering, can be altered to favor biodiesel production. Cyanobacteria offer attractive advantages over the use of plants like corn or switchgrass, producing many times the energy yield with energy input from the sun and without the necessity of taking arable cropland out of production.
Colleague Xinyao Liu and Curtiss have spent the last few years modifying these microbes. Their goal is to bypass costly processing steps (such as cell disruption, filtration) for optimal cyanobacterial biofuel production.
"We wanted to develop strains of cyanobacteria that basically can process themselves," said Curtiss. "A couple of years ago, we developed a Green Recovery process that is triggered by removing carbon dioxide to control the synthesis of enzymes, called lipases, that degrade the cell membranes and release the microbes' precious cargo of free fatty acids that can be converted to biofuels,"
However, when growth of cyanobacteria is scaled up to meet industrial needs, they become dense, and the self-shading that occurs in concentrated cultures, does not let in enough light to produce enough of the lipases to efficiently drive the process. Thus the original Green Recovery was light dependent and maximally efficient at sub-optimal culture densities.
Curtiss' team looked again at nature to improve their Green Recovery method. The process uses enzymes found in nature called thermostable lipases synthesized by thermophilic organisms that grow at high temperatures such as in hot springs. These thermostable lipases break down fats and membrane lipids into the fatty acid biodiesel precursors, but only at high temperatures. The team's new process, called thermorecovery, uses a heat-triggered, self-destruct system. By taking a culture and shifting to a high temperature, the lipases are called into action. This process occurs with concentrated cultures in the dark under conditions that would be very favorable for an industrial process.
They tested a total of 7 different lipases from microbes that thrive in hot springs under very high temperatures, a scorching 60-70 C (158F). The research team swapped each lipase gene into a cyanobacteria strain that grows normally at 30 C (86 F) and tested the new strains.
They found the Fnl lipase from Feridobacterium nodosum, an extremophile found in the hot springs of New Zealand, released the most fatty acids. The highest yield occurred when the carbon dioxide was removed from the cells for one day (to turn on the genes making the lipases), then treated at 46C (114F) for two days (for maximum lipase activity).
The yield was 15 percent higher than the Green Recovery method, and because there were less reagents used, time (one day for thermorecovery vs. one week for Green Recovery) and space for the recovery. Thermorecovery resulted in an estimated 80% cost savings.
Furthermore, in a continuous semi-batch production experiment, the team showed that daily harvested cultures released could release a high level of fatty acid and the productivity could last for at least 20 days. Finally, the water critical to growing the cultures could be recycled to maintain the growth of the original culture.
"Our latest results are encouraging and we are confident of making further improvements to achieve enhanced productivity in strains currently under construction and development," said Curtiss. "In addition, optimizing growth conditions associated with scale-up will also improve productivity."

Remember how before Anderson Silva beat Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, Sonnen said he wanted Silva's wife to make him a steak, and then after the fight, Silva invited Sonnen to a a barbecue? Well, the barbecue happened, but Sonnen didn't show.
Silva says it wasn't just some hamburgers on the grill affair, but a true Brazilian gaucho barbecue. Sonnen now has his sights on UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and he's forgotten all about his pal Andy.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake rocked one of the few inhabited islands in Alaska's Aleutian chain on Wednesday, but no damage has been found, federal and local officials said.
The magnitude 6.9 quake, centered 80 miles southwest of Adak, struck at 3:40 p.m. local time (7.40 p.m. EDT), the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said. No tsunami warning was issued, but scientists will monitor the area for any possible earthquake-related waves, center Director Paul Whitmore said.
In Adak, a community of about 330, "We definitely felt it," City Manager Layton Lockett said.
The building that houses city offices and the local school, engineered to withstand frequent earthquakes that strike the region, performed as designed, Lockett said.
"You could just hear the building move, and things were shaking," he said.
No damage was found, though officials were concerned about the fate of underground pipes, he said. The school, which has about 20 students, was out of session at the time.
Adak, an island city about 1,300 miles southwest of Anchorage, is a converted U.S. Navy station that once housed 6,000 people. It now operates as a port and seafood-processing center serving the North Pacific commercial fishing fleet.
Other moderate earthquakes have struck western Alaska in recent days, according to the center.
A magnitude 4.9 quake was recorded 90 miles west of the Alaska Peninsula town of Cold Bay on Tuesday. A magnitude 5.2 quake about 90 miles southwest of Kodiak was recorded on September 18.
Sure we heard some early rumblings about a new tablet from Barnes & Noble, and no, we can't say we were particularly surprised by the revelation -- after all, no one expected the bookstore to sit idly by and let Amazon own the holiday shopping season with its freshly souped-up Kindle Fire line. But the company did manage to offer up a few surprises with today's announcement -- biggest of all (literally, in fact) was the launch of a 9-incher, the Nook HD+. And where the HD borrowed some style cues from B&N's Simple Touch line, its bigger brother is the aesthetic descendent of Nook tablets past, borrowing that long, skinny body and even offering up a winking reference to the carabiner that lent such a dramatic distinction to past products.
That said, we're not simply repeating the move from Nook Color to Nook Tablet here. The Nook HD+ is a far more significant upgrade, even as it pays a little tribute to its predecessors. Barnes & Noble's really gunning to make a splash in the budget tablet space this holiday season, and while the company's clearly betting on the smaller and cheaper HD to be the big seller, a company rep told us that he expects that HD+ to be a sleeper hit for the company. And certainly it's easy to see why the company's got some confidence this time around -- the device is sleek, fast, hi-res and affordable. But can it succeed in such a cutthroat market? Check out some impressions after the break and judge for yourself.
President Ahmadinejad of Iran, speaking at the United Nations, criticized the existing model as unfair, militaristic, and the reason 'uncivilized Zionists' are threatening his country. He did not address the reason for those tensions ? Iran's nuclear program.

Despite the clock ticking down to military action against his country, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad largely ignored current events in his United Nations speech Wednesday and chose instead to call for a ?new world order? free of the domination of the ruling big powers.

In what was the controversial leader?s eighth and last UN speech as Iranian president, Mr. Ahmadinejad laid the world?s misery at the feet of the ?arrogant? few powers who rule from the UN Security Council, and offered the Non-Aligned Movement, which groups more than 120 developing countries, as a better model for governing the world.
Iran holds elections in June, and Ahmadinejad is barred by the constitution from seeking a third term.
Ahmadinejad did refer once to Israel and to the international crisis over Iran?s advancing nuclear program, saying the unfair and militaristic global system is what led to ?the uncivilized Zionists threatening military action against our great country.?
In years past, the Iranian leader?s provocative pronouncements ? denying Israel?s right to exist, doubting that Islamist terrorists carried out the 9/11 attacks ? have prompted walkouts by delegations as he spoke. This year Ahmadinejad stood before a hall about three-quarters full, with the Canadian delegation one of the few to walk out.
The US announced beforehand that it would not attend the speech in protest of comments Ahmadinejad made earlier in New York rejecting Israel?s legitimacy, and because the speech fell on a Jewish holiday.
Saying Ahmadinejad had been ?spouting ? repulsive slurs against Israel,? the US Mission to the UN said in a statement that ?it's particularly unfortunate that Mr. Ahmadinejad?will have the platform of the UN General Assembly on Yom Kippur, which?is why the United States has decided not to attend.?
The theme of a ?new world order? is not a new one for Ahmadinejad, but it was the first time he dedicated his UN speech to it. He said ?Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus? and other religions and cultures could live in harmony and peace if it weren?t for the ?arrogance and hegemony of the ruling minority [and its] oppressive international order.?
To first begin to look at the reasons behind mood disorders, let us first see its definition, "a disturbance in the person's mood is hypothesized to be the main underlying feature." Two examples include major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, which can be the result of drug or alcohol abuse.
Mood disorders that are a result of substance abuse can directly be traced back to a psychoactive drug. Examples of this are: amphetamines, metamphetamines, and cocaine. From there the chemical can cause a chemical imbalance that may cause the user to have delusions and extreme paranoia.
Major depressive disorder patients are typically a higher risk for suicide, however, with the treatment of a trained health professional, these tendencies are dramatically reduced. Also included under major depressive disorder are: melancholic depression which is a loss of pleasure, psychotic major depression in which case the sufferer has delusions or hallucinations, catatonic depression which is rare and a severe form of major depression.
Bipolar disorder used to be manic depression and has alternating periods of feeling manic and being depressed. There are three types of bipolar disorder: bipolar I which is one or more manic episodes with or without depression, bipolar II which is recurrent hypomania and depressive episodes, and cyclothymia which is hypomanic and dysthumic episodes.
Now that we have reviewed the major mood disorders, let us look at the reasons behind mood disorders. These reasons can be as simple as genetic factors. Some mood disorders can be passed down and it does not necessarily have to be from the parent as it can skip generations. Also, neurotransmitters can be the reason behind a mood disorder. It can also be from a chemical imbalance.

The advent of clothing lines especially for full-figured women in recent years has proven that skinny can not always be ?in.? Being fashionable is a privilege women of all size should be able to enjoy. In fact, to feel gorgeous one does not have to be a size zero, right?
Considering these aspects, several changes in women?s fashion have taken place over the years. Not only have regular retail stores started catering to women of all sizes, there are even brands that are now established exclusively for women of full-figured sizes. It is, no doubt, a revolution in itself, for plus size clothing to take over the market with such gusto. One can go shopping and find a wide range of outfits for daily wear in plus sizes. From simple T-shirts, shirts and tunics to stylish blouses, cardigans and dresses, casual attire that spells chic is no longer a choice only thin women can make.
Moreover, plus size formal dresses, office plus size wear, designer plus size clothing, plus size party dresses, and plus size wedding attire are easily available in markets. These changes have deeply impacted the way women dress and think, allowing women to be more confident and not let size be an impediment to making a fashion statement. For that matter, there are numerous pieces of clothing that one can do justice to, only on a full-bodied figure!
It will not be surprising if you conclude that clothes for full-figured women come with a huge price tag, since they are especially tailored. This is a myth that needs to be broken. Women?s clothing in larger sizes is equally priced and not unique in any sense. Yes, what is unique is that women who are not skinny or lean need not hide their style quotient in the closet any more

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) -- Rescue helicopters flew over the high slopes of a northern Nepal peak again Monday to search for climbers lost in an avalanche that killed at least nine mountaineers and injured others. Many of the climbers were French, German and Italian.
The avalanche a day earlier hit a camp with more than two dozen climbers high up the slopes of the world's eighth-highest peak, Mount Manaslu. It came at the start of Nepal's autumn climbing season, when the end of the monsoon rains makes weather in the high Himalayas unpredictable.
Police official Basanta Bahadur Kuwar said three rescue helicopters resumed the search on Monday morning. Bad weather had forced them to halt flyover searching Sunday afternoon. Other climbers and guides on the mountain were also searching on foot and had managed to bring three more bodies to the base camp on Monday, Kuwar said.
The bodies of a Nepalese guide and a German man were recovered on Sunday and rescue pilots had reported spotting seven other bodies on the slopes. Spain's Foreign Ministry said from Madrid that one climber killed was Spanish. The identities of the others were still being confirmed.
Ten climbers survived, but many were injured and were flown to hospitals by rescue helicopters.
Nepal's autumn mountaineering season is less popular than spring, when hundreds of climbers crowd the high Himalayan peaks. Italian, German and French teams were on the mountain, with a total of 231 climbers and guides, but not all were at the higher camps hit by the avalanche, officials said.
The avalanche hit a camp at 7,000 meters (22,960 feet) early in the morning as the climbers were preparing to head toward the summit, which is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high.
Rescue pilot Pasang, who uses only one name, said three injured French citizens and two Germans had been transported to hospitals in Katmandu. He said rescuers were also attempting to bring the bodies of the dead back to the base camp.
Nepal has eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world. Climbers have complained in recent years that climbing conditions have deteriorated and risks of accidents have increased.
Veteran mountain guide Apa, who has climbed Mount Everest a record 21 times, traveled for months across Nepal earlier this year campaigning about the effects of global warming on the mountain peaks.
He told The Associated Press the mountains now have considerably less ice and snow, making it harder for climbers to use ice axes and crampons on their boots to get a grip on the slopes.
Loose snow also increases the risk of avalanches. The cause of Sunday's avalanche was not immediately determined.
Bill Amos, of Portland, Oregon, an avid mountaineer and ice climber who founded the mountaineering apparel company NW Alpine, said ''it's super sad when our fellow climbers die.'' Amos said his initial thought when he heard about the deadly avalanche in Nepal was that the mountain was being overcrowded with climbers.
''That seems to be the same thing that's going on in Everest,'' he said. ''All of that is overcrowding and these commercial expeditions trying to make money.''
Amos added that people who venture into the mountains need to understand the risks and dangers associated with backcountry travel and be able to spot avalanche terrain and dangerous snowpack.

The Verizon Wireless version of the iPhone 5, which went on sale Friday, comes with a secret and unexpected feature: it works on AT&T's network as well.
Confirming blog reports, The Associated Press found that a Verizon iPhone 5 accepts an AT&T "SIM card" ? a chip that identifies a phone to a network. The phone can then be active on AT&T's network.
It's the first time Verizon iPhones have been able to access AT&T's network without complicated hacking procedures. The feature gives Verizon customers the option to switch carriers rather than renewing an expired contract.
It's unclear whether the feature is intended and whether the phones will work with other carriers such as T-Mobile USA.
Verizon Wireless referred questions about the SIM card feature to Apple, which did not respond.?

Since the product was build around their needs, it?s only natural that this would be the ideal product for that niche.

When Addie started teething as a baby, I wanted to give an amber teething necklace a try. I have never used them for either of our sons and didn?t know much about them.
I was offered to review one and we gave it a try. I loved it, not only did it seem to really help with Addison?s misery, but it was also adorable. Where ever we went she would get compliments on her bling.
We never really took it off of her, and with her molars making an entrance into our life these past couple weeks, I figured we should continue using it. It had been so much of a life saver all these months, why not continue right?
Tuesday night after leaving the grocery store as a family, we were right around the corner from the house and I heard a crunching coming from the backseat.
?Boys? What is that noise??? automatically assuming someone got into a bag which contained snacks from the store.
?That isn?t us Mommy. It is coming from Addie. She is eating her necklace?
?PULL OVER!?
As my husband pulled over to the side of the road I jumped out into the backseat to do the typical finger sweep through her mouth and discovered pieces of the beads in her mouth. I freaked and took the necklace off while still sweeping through her mouth to make sure I didn?t miss any pieces.
Talk about sheer HORROR!
I couldn?t believe it!
She had never, ever, EVER tried to put her necklace in her mouth let alone eat it! You would think we don?t feed her?!
Needless to say, that night we retired the necklace, and my heart broke a little bit. Especially after last night when she woke up at 2:30am and stayed up for an hour crying in what seemed to be pain and frustration of her mouth.
The most helpless feeling as a parent is not being able to comfort your baby. After climbing in her bed with her several times, Addison decided the only way she would go back to sleep was on Daddy?s chest.
I foresee a long stretch of frustration without the help of her teething necklace until these molars aren?t being such assholes!

The iPhone 5 is now on sale in most launch markets starting today, and as daylight approaches on the U.S. west coast, the coveted device will be hitting that market as well. According to early reviews, it's a great device, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the right one for everybody. Even if you're still a potential iPhone buyer, the lineup has never looked so good. The iPhone 4 and the 4S remain on the market, and they both have a lot to offer, too, at a considerable discount.
KB Home has reported a third-quarter profit of $3.3 million, or 4-cents a share, for the quarter ending Aug. 31, news representing a turn-about from a net loss of $9.6 million or 13-cents a share from the year before.

KB Home has also reported that the West Coast is showing signs of strength. Net orders are up for the nine months, as is the backlog on homes and home values.

?It is clear that the recovery in housing is gaining momentum across the country, as inventory levels are declining and home prices are on the rise,? Jeffrey Mezger, president and chief executive officer, said in a statement released this morning.
?In particular, we are seeing dramatic improvement in California,? he said. ?Continued strengthening in the coastal markets is now spreading inland to Sacramento, the Central Valley and the Inland Empire, he said.

A Philadelphia businessman took $20,000 from his own pocket to transform a trash-filled city-owned lot overgrown with weeds into a beautiful outdoor mini-park. Long-frustrated neighbors sang his praises for his deed -- but the city calls him a trespasser and is threatening to take him to court, the Philadelphia Daily News reported.
Ori Feibush (pictured at left), a real estate developer, had tried to buy the neglected 1,600-square-foot lot for years, but the city wouldn't let him. According to ABC News, Feibush was preparing last month to open his own coffee shop adjacent to the rundown lot -- with its cracked and broken sidewalks -- and that's when he decided to take matters into his own hands.
"I didn't wake up one morning and spend tens of thousands of dollars to remove blight that was a danger to residents and customers," he told ABC News.
Feibush did go to the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority to reveal his plans for the space before initiating the $20,000 venture. He said that the agency told him that it would take care of cleaning the lot and that he did not have permission to enter it.
"They promised they would get around to it," Feibush said. "I did not believe I could open up a coffee shop when people couldn't traverse the sidewalk."
After getting frustrated when the lot was not tended to, Feibush used his money to clear out what he estimated to be 40 tons of debris, including removing weeds and trash. He also had a new sidewalk poured and brought in a bench and a picnic table. He said that families frequent the property now.
"This was a lot of garbage," resident Elaine McGrath told the Philadelphia Daily News, referring to the old, neglected lot. "Now it's gorgeous. I'm excited."
The city doesn't see it that way.
"Like any property owner, [the authority] does not permit unauthorized access to or alteration of its property," Paul D. Chrystie, director of communications at Philadelphia's Office of Housing and Community Development, told the Daily News in an email. "This is both on principle (no property owner knowingly allows trespassing) and to limit taxpayer liability."
Chrystie added that the agency is "actively reviewing its options at this time" against Feibush.
"They said we need to return it to the condition we found it in immediately," Feibush said. "They don't like nice things."
The city contends that the lot Feibush refurbished was one of many city-owned properties up for sale but that it has no record of Feibush's interest in buying the land. Feibush said that he has filed seven written requests and made 24 phone calls to the city to take over the property.

Michael Bisping has a fight with Brian Stann at UFC 152 on Saturday night, but before that, he found a fight with a fan who disrupted his workout on Wednesday. He explained why he threw the fan out of the open workouts to MMA Fighting. (The explanation is at the beginning of the video.)
"I was just trying to do my pads and stuff, and the guy's got no respect. He annoyed my boxing coach more than anything. My boxing coach got a little upset. I could see it in his eyes," Bisping said.
"I was trying to get a workout in, and he's just disrupting the whole thing. He's upsetting my boxing coach, and so I'm like, you gotta go. You gotta go. If you can't have respect ... we're here. We're putting on a display for you guys. If you can't respect it, you have to go outside with the naughty children."
During big fight weeks like this one, the UFC will often offer three free events to fans: open workouts, the press conference and weigh-ins. Open workouts are undoubtedly the best option, because it lets fans get close to fighters to take pictures and see how they train.
The fans and media being there make the workouts more casual than a normal pre-fight training session, but it's still a workout. Fighters are cutting weight and thinking about their bout and should get to do that without being heckled. Even someone like Bisping, who loves to jaw with anyone and everyone, deserves to work out without distraction.
We witnessed the Sony Xperia T make its way through the FCC approval process a few days ago, but there was still something drastically missing: compatibility with AT&T LTE. But as some images published by UK retailer Phones4U attested to, we figured it was only a matter of time. Now that time has come, as the FCC pushed through the Xperia Mint Amy LT30at (the global Xperia T is the Mint Rita LT30p, if you're keeping track) today. Not only does the Amy sport the requisite AT&T-friendly bands (4 and 17, with support for bands 2 and 5 as well), some of the docs specifically call this device out as the AT&T version. We've always admired Sony's bluntness around FCC docs when other manufacturers attempt to hide as much information as possible. To do some digging of your own, have a look-see at the source link.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The creators of "Budget Hero," the popular serious game which helps people of all ages understand the federal budget and the trade-offs involved in the budgetary process, have launched an Election Edition to illuminate the budget impact of policies championed by President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney as well as those related to the impending "fiscal cliff."
The updated version contains 27 new policies in all, including the Ryan Medicare and Medicaid Plans; Taxing Sugar-Sweetened Beverages; Changing Distribution of Social Security Benefits; and many more.
The Election Edition was made possible by a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It includes the latest numbers from the Congressional Budget Office and a wide variety of other sources, such as the Congressional Research Service.
"With well over 1 million plays, Budget Hero has already helped bring the American public into the debate about fixing our federal budget," said Michael Van Dusen, executive vice president and COO of the Wilson Center. "The election edition provides an engaging way for citizens to learn more about the budgetary proposals of each Presidential candidate, using nonpartisan resources that allow them to make informed decisions."
Nearly 20,000 comments have been submitted through the game, with the majority of commenters saying it changed the way they think about the federal budget. Many players also noted the tradeoffs they were willing to make, and showed a willingness to make choices that were not in their self-interest.
"Budget Hero is allowing us to gather perspectives and insights from America on what role government should play and to help journalists tell a whole new dimension to the federal budget story," said Mike Reszler, vice president for digital media at American Public Media. "The game goes to the core of what the Public Insight Network is about: a belief that technology coupled with great reporting can add diversity, depth and context to important issues and spark meaningful public dialogue."
