SAN DIEGO, March 25, 2012 Nationally renowned science journalist, author, broadcaster and blogger Paul Raeburn will receive the 2012 James T. Grady-James H. Stack Award for Interpreting Chemistry for the Public from the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, here this week.

Raeburn will participate in a special Presidential Symposium, "Communicating Chemistry to the Public," which will be held Monday during the ACS' 243^rd National Meeting & Exhibition. The symposium begins at 1:15 p.m. in Room 4 of the San Diego Convention Center and was organized by ACS President Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D. The award will be presented during a black-tie banquet and ceremony on Tuesday.

Nominations are open for ACS' 2013 National Awards. An ACS video series, Prized Science, celebrates how the scientific discoveries honored in the society's national awards improve everyday life.

One of the oldest and most prestigious accolades in journalism, the award dates to 1955 and consists of $3,000, a gold medallion and a bronze replica of the medallion. ACS named the award for James T. Grady and James H. Stack, former managers of the ACS News Service. Publisher of the Weekly PressPac, the News Service was established in 1919, making ACS one of the first scientific societies with a dedicated function of communicating and explaining science to the public.

The award cites Raeburn's work as science editor and chief science correspondent at the Associated Press from 1981 to 1996, where thousands of his articles were distributed to more than 1,700 newspapers and 6,000 television and radio stations worldwide. Raeburn then spent seven years as science editor and a senior writer at BusinessWeek. His freelance writing has appeared in The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Scientific American, Psychology Today, Self, Technology Review and numerous other publications.

Raeburn currently is a media critic at the Knight Science Journalism Tracker, and he blogs on fathers and families at Psychology Today and at his own Fathers and Families blog. He is a regular panelist and guest host of Talk of the Nation: Science Friday on National Public Radio. GIGLIO, Italy (AP) ? Searchers on Thursday found three more bodies in the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship that capsized off the Italian coast, an official said, raising the number discovered to 28 and leaving four still missing.

Civil Protection agency chief Franco Gabrielli did not give details on the sex or ages of the victims, and it was not immediately clear where the bodies were spotted. The remaining missing are presumed dead.

The ship hit a rocky reef, took on water and turned over just outside the port of the tiny island of Giglio off Tuscany on Jan. 13. Divers and searchers have been combing the half-submerged ship, from passenger cabins to elevators to the decks where many of the 4,200 passengers and crew gathered during the delayed and frantic evacuation.

Even before the latest bodies were found, eight discovered in recent weeks were awaiting official identification. Weeks in the water badly decomposed the remains, and forensic authorities have used DNA sampling to try to identify them.

Among those listed missing or unidentified are a crew member from India and several passengers, including an elderly U.S. couple and others from Italy and Germany.

The Concordia capsized in a protected sea sanctuary, and salvage teams have been removing fuel since Feb. 12 in hopes of sparing the pristine waters from pollution. Costa Crociere SpA., the Italian cruise company, and Italian officials said fuel removal was expected to be completed by Friday evening.

Occasional bad weather and choppy seas have at times forced suspension of both the search for bodies and the fuel removal.

The operation to remove the wrecked Concordia itself could take as long as 12 months. Bids for the job are being evaluated.

The Concordia's Italian captain is under house arrest near Naples. Capt. Francesco Schettino is under investigation for alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship during the evacuation. Schettino has denied wrongdoing and claimed that the reef wasn't marked on charts.

Investigators are probing allegations that Schettino deliberately came too close to the island as part of a publicity stunt for the cruise line. Costa Crociere officials have distanced themselves from Schettino.

A new paper by researchers from the University of Georgia and Princeton University sheds light on the critical part played by a little-studied element, molybdenum, in the nutrient cycles of tropical forests. Understanding the role of molybdenum may help scientists more accurately predict how tropical forests will respond to climate change. The findings were published March 21 in the journal PLoS ONE.

Nutrient cycles track the movement of essential nutrients as they loop through the environment, into plants and animals and back into the environment. One of the most important of these nutrients is nitrogen.

"The main way that new nitrogen is added to an ecosystem is through a process called nitrogen fixation," said Nina Wurzburger, assistant professor in the UGA Odum School of Ecology and the paper's lead author. "Bacteria in the soil can pull nitrogen out of the atmosphere and convert it into a form available for themselves and for plants. They do this by creating an enzyme called nitrogenase."

For years, it was assumed that the element phosphorus was the key ingredient bacteria in the soil needed to make this enzyme work. Now Wurzburger and her colleagues Jean Philippe Bellenger, Anne M.L. Kraepiel and Lars O. Hedin of Princeton University have found that although phosphorus is indeed important to the process, another elementmolybdenumis also crucial.

"Our results were quite unexpected," said Hedin, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. "We discovered that the trace element molybdenum often was the limiting nutrient, not phosphorus, as most theories would predict."

An earlier study by Princeton researchers revealed that molybdenum might play a previously unsuspected role in nitrogen fixation in tropical forest ecosystems. The researchers wanted to learn more. Working in lowland Panama, they conducted experiments at six forest sites that had similar climates and plant species but differed in the amount of phosphorus in the soil.

"It was fortuitous that we came across this naturally occurring phosphorus gradient," Wurzburger said. "The only difference between the sites is the geology, so we had a natural range of soil phosphorus levelsfrom high to low."

All the sites had a similar low level of molybdenum.

The researchers took a set of soil samples from each site and treated them by adding phosphorus, molybdenum or a combination of both. They then measured the response of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the soil.

They expected that nitrogen fixation would increase in phosphorus-rich soils when they added molybdenum and in phosphorus-poor soils when they added phosphorus, but that was not the case.

While the phosphorus-rich soils responded as predicted, the phosphorus-poor soils did not. In phosphorus-poor soils, nitrogen fixation did not increase with the addition of phosphorus aloneor, for that matter, molybdenum alonebut only responded when both phosphorus and molybdenum were added together.

"The most surprising result of our work is that phosphorus by itself is not the major constraint we've thought it to be," Wurzburger said. "This is particularly surprising for tropical forests where the highly weathered soils are thought to be poor in phosphorus."

The reason for this response, the researchers found, was that molybdenum and phosphorus behave very differently with organic matter in soil. While much of the phosphorus in soil is in a form that plants can use, much of the molybdenumone of the least abundant of the elements essential to plantsis not.

"The chemistry of the leaf litter seems to lock up the molybdenum and make it unavailable to bacteria," Wurzburger said. "Therefore, no matter how abundant or poor phosphorus is in the environment, it's molybdenum that seems to present a consistent constraint for nitrogen-fixing bacteria."

The researchers are continuing to pursue their understanding of how this relatively obscure element interacts with other nutrient cycles.

"One big question is how this might apply to other ecosystems such as temperate or boreal forests," Wurzburger said. "We just don't know how important molybdenum might be. I want to know whether these findings relate to these systems too."

The answers to these questions may have widespread implications. "Tropical forests regulate the earth's climate system," Wurzburger said. "They sequester a large amount of carbon through photosynthesis. Climate models predict that tropical forests may respond to elevated levels of carbon dioxide by sequestering even more carbon, but their ability to do this may be constrained by nitrogen. Since molybdenum constrains nitrogen fixation, it might also determine how much carbon tropical forests can sequester. We really need to know more."
