Review: Google's Nexus 7 guns for the Kindle

NEW YORK (AP) ? In the 1982 sci-fi movie "Blade Runner," there are hints that the hero, played by Harrison Ford, is an artificial human ? an "android" or "replicant." His job is to go out and kill other, rogue androids.

If he's an android, he's of the latest model, Nexus 7. That's also the name Google Inc. has picked for the first tablet to bear the Google brand. Clearly, its mission is to go out and kill rogue tablets running Google's Android software.

Specifically, the Nexus 7 seems to have been designed to give anyone who bought a Kindle Fire from Amazon.com Inc. or a Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble Inc. a lethal case of buyer's remorse.

The Nexus 7 costs $199, the same that Amazon and Barnes & Noble charge for their tablets. But it's better than theirs in significant ways, as it became clear to me after a couple of days of use. Google announced the tablet last week and is taking pre-orders for delivery in mid-July.

Why is Google targeting the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet? Because they've been relatively successful competitors to Apple Inc.'s iPad tablet, yet Google is getting no benefit from their success.

Google makes its Android operating software available for any device manufacturer to use. Amazon and Barnes & Noble took Android and modified it heavily. Namely, they took out the applications that point to Google's services and the advertising it sells. Instead, the apps point to the companies' own stores.

In other words, these tablets are rogue Androids.

Other tablets, such as Samsung's Galaxy, use the "proper," Googlish version of Android, but they've been more expensive than the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. Apparently, Google thought it was time to make a really good, proper Android tablet for $199.

It's succeeded. As far as I can tell from my few days of use so far, the Nexus 7 is a really good value. It's made by AsusTek Computer, a Taiwanese company that was originally planning to sell a similar tablet for $249.

The Nexus 7 is a plain black slab with a screen that's 7 inches on the diagonal ? the same size as the Nook and the Fire. The most noticeable feature it has over the competition is a low-resolution camera, facing the user. That means the Nexus 7 can be used for videoconferencing, but it's nearly impossible to use for snapshots. It also has a microphone, which the Fire lacks, making Amazon's device useless even for audio conferencing.

The screen has a higher resolution than the Fire, and colors look more vivid. The whole tablet is slightly thinner and appreciably lighter than the Fire.

Other nifty but invisible hardware upgrades on the Nexus 7 include Bluetooth and GPS chips for use with headsets and navigation software. The tablet even has a chip for near-field communications, which means it can "talk" to some phones and store payment terminals when tapped against them. I used the Nexus 7 to pay for toilet paper in a drugstore.

But the most important difference between the Nexus 7 and its prey is the software. Not only is it running stock Android, but it's also the first device to run the latest version of Android. Google, with its trademark combination of cute and cutthroat, calls it "Jelly Bean."

Stock Android gives Nexus 7 access to a much wider array of applications than its competitors, running into the hundreds of thousands. The diversity also applies to content: You can use a wider range of e-book stores and movie services on the Nexus 7. You can read Kindle books on the Nexus 7, for example, but you can't read Google books on the Kindle.

Google does its best, though, to steer users to its "Play" store for apps, movies, music and books. Buyers even get a $25 credit toward store purchases, partly defraying the cost of the tablet itself.

With a powerful processing chip and plentiful RAM memory, the type available for running programs, the Nexus 7 is fast and slick. You can switch directly from application to application, something that isn't possible with the Fire or Nook. They both force you to exit an application and go to the main menu before jumping into another one.

The chief issue buyers will likely bump into with the Nexus 7 is a lack of storage space. The $199 model has just 8 gigabytes of storage, and a quarter of that is overhead. It has just 5.9 gigabytes actually available. With downloads of a few applications, some songs and one movie, more than half was gone.

There's a step-up model with 16 gigabytes of storage for $249, which I would highly recommend. There's no option to expand storage with a memory card, a feature available with the Nook Tablet and many other Android tablets (but not the Kindle Fire, either).

Early buyers may also find that some applications will not work on it. Because Jelly Bean is the bleeding edge of Android, app developers haven't had time to rewrite their products for it. I encountered this problem with a couple of applications, including a popular video player called MX Player.

Lastly, the size of the screen is going to frustrate some buyers ? the ones who really wanted an iPad. The Nexus 7's screen is a nice step from a smartphone screen, but the iPad is a really big step up. Magazines and full-page documents, for example, work great on the iPad screen, but are difficult to view on a 7-inch screen. The iPad also has the best selection and quality of third-party software.

In "Blade Runner," one of the super-strong androids breaks two of the hero's fingers, one by one. The Nexus 7 deserves a better reception.

It's a great entry in the cheap-and-small tablet category, even if it's not perfect. But then again, who is?

Earlier this evening, and as of the moment of writing this thread, On Friday evening,[sup]1[/sup] there was an extensive discussion in the out of character chat about the ways in which the Multiverse is managed or administrated, and various ideas for multiversal theories, canons, realities, alternate realities or dimensions, and acknowledgement (or lack thereof) of other players' characters, factions, or in-character events or backstories.

While the Multiverse is a single roleplay administrated at the moment, to my knowledge, solely by Rem?us, its constituency of roleplayers is quite large and consistently active throughout both the chat and forum-styled segments of our site's roleplay system. Furthermore, in my experience, game masters of many roleplays not only actively seek but consider the feedback of their players in regard to the management and direction of their roleplays, whether they not they adopt concrete suggestions in adapting gameplay. Thus, I've chosen to create this thread to facilitate further discussion and perhaps elicit further ideas or opinions from those who were not present during this discussion for whatever reasons. I'm also curious about what discussion I missed after nature and FailPowerCompany conspired to remove me from the site and internet in general.[sup]1[/sup]

Two major multiversal theories that were presented and debated, despite not usually being identified explicitly by the names that I've assigned below, included the following:

• Quantum physics multiversal theory styled Multiverse (free for all)
  Under this theory, which is the predominant practice de facto in the Multiverse, an infinite number of canons, realities, or dimensions may exist simultaneously without regard to contradictions that rise from illogical or innately contradictory or paradoxical character or faction backstories, place locations, abilities, technological innovations, or elements of nature. Typically, such contradictions or illogicalities are explained in-character by suggesting that characters are from different universes, realities, or dimensions that co-exist despite what would otherwise make no logical sense. Events and developments that occur among individual characters or larger factions only affect or influence those whose players choose to acknowledge them; those who wish not to acknowledge specific events or developments are free to do so without consequence, and typically form an in-character explanation for why those events do not affect their character(s) or faction(s).
• Roleplay or writing theory styled Multiverse (unified canon)
  Under this theory, which has been suggested by a number of seemingly disgruntled folks but which is at best practiced only in a limited sense and by mutual agreement among different small groups of players, there is one unified canon or reality in which all character or faction backstories, place locations, abilities, technological innovations, or elements of nature can co-exist by natural logic and without creating complex contradictions or paradoxes. Events and developments that occur among individual characters or larger factions influence the entire Multiverse and will automatically and naturally affect any characters or factions that would logically have reason to be affected by them, rather than only the characters or factions of players who choose to acknowledge them.

Both multiversal theories have merits, but there are criticisms of both as well. Criticisms of a quantum physics multiversal theory styled Multiverse note the lack of overarching guidelines or concrete rules, the unstructured playing environment, and the lack of cohesive player inter-collaboration. Criticisms of a roleplay or writing theory styled Multiverse note the potential restrictions on creative freedom, the forced interactions among players who might otherwise want nothing to do with each other, and the complex developments and collaboration required to produce and maintain a single unified canon.

For example, one participant in the discussion argued that as an advocate of the second theory, every player with characters from or living on Terra should have responded to the glassing of Terra by barney_fife's Aschen Confederation, which happened about one year ago in real-world time. In reality, a majority of players chose not to acknowledge the glassing, which was accepted by barney_fife, who operates under the first theory. Another participant in the discussion suggested that all of the "NRP" (nation roleplay, in which individual players take on the role of a larger de jure or de facto nation-state) should be severed from the Multiverse and placed in a separate roleplay. To some extent, there is a mechanism for that located at www.nationcouncil.org. On the other hand, Rem?us has repeatedly emphasized that no distinction should be made between "NRP" and "non-NRP," an argument that has been advanced by those players most frequently associated with "NRP," who posit that the economic, social, political, diplomatic, and militaristic relationships among nation-states should serve to create an overarching economic, social, and political background in which roleplay among individual characters (usually but not always unaffiliated with a faction), the "bread and butter" so to speak of roleplay, occurs. In accordance with the second theory, this makes sense; however, with the first theory, there is very little room for an overarching background. Functionally, events and developments among the nation-states and factions that exist in the Multiverse affect only those who choose to accept them.

In regards to rules established for a roleplay, I've generally tried to keep fairly vague restrictions. The rules in my roleplays tend to be written along the lines of the following:

1.) Post within a reasonable amount of time. (This may vary depending on the group of roleplayers as well as the medium.)
2.) Notify us if you're going to be away or without internet access for an extended period of time. (This is a courtesy.)
3.) You may write whatever you wish, provided that you remain within the bounds of the genre. (For example, if the genre is realistic and modern, a vampire from the sixteenth century and a fleet admiral of a multi-planetary space empire are equally out of place and unacceptable, as are the use of mana or force fields. On the other hand, there is no in-character reason to use a cell phone or reference the internet if the genre is medieval fantasy.)
4.) No god-modding (forcing the consequences of your actions onto another character or directly controlling another character without the other player's permission), meta-gaming (using out-of-character knowledge in game when your character has no in-character reason for having that knowledge), or power-playing (using unreasonable, undefined, or intentionally disruptive levels of power without an in-character justification).

It was over thirty hours before our power was finally switched on again, so that means that I'm posting this thread much later than it was originally intended to be posted. (It was on the same level of intensity and frequency as this storm, though the lightning was a heckuva lot brighter than is discernible in this video.) Admittedly, not the most enjoyable and fun weekend I've ever had. Did I mention that the power, including air conditioning, went out during a weekend of record sweltering heat and humidity? Temperatures exceeded 100? Fahrenheit (close to or a bit higher than 40? Celsius for you non-American folks), with obscene amounts of humidity. Fun, fun. In any case, that's the reason for the strikeout in this thread.

Palfrey ends Cuba-Florida swim amid strong current

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Endurance swimmer Penny Palfrey has abandoned her effort to become the first woman to swim unassisted from Cuba to the Florida Keys, ending her odyssey after almost 41 hours in the water and about three quarters of the way through the more than 100-mile swim, her support team said early Sunday.

Andrea Woodburn, one of the team members, said by phone that the British-born Australian marathon swimmer halted her effort around midnight about 26 miles south of Key West because of a strong ocean current working against her.

"She is fine," Woodburn said from Florida's Key West, without giving further details on Palfrey's condition. Woodburn said she had been in contact with Palfrey's boat and was told the swimmer had to get out of the water when she encountered the too-strong current in the treacherous Florida Straits.

The waters in the area are notorious for fickle ocean currents, including the powerful Gulf Stream. But further details of whether she had encountered the Gulf Stream or a side eddy of that current or some other were not immediately available.

Earlier in the day, Palfrey had been swimming steady and strong and reported no physical complaints other than jellyfish stings more than halfway into the swim, according to her support crew.

At about 8:30 p.m. EDT (0030 GMT) roughly 37.5 hours into the swim, the 49-year-old grandmother was 76 miles (122.31 kilometers) from her starting point at a marina in the Cuban capital, according to her website's GPS tracking report. At the time she was positioned about 30 miles (61.15 kilometers) south, southwest of Key West.

Previously, her personal best was 67 miles (108 kilometers) when she swam between Little Cayman and Grand Cayman islands last year, according to Woodburn, part of her support team in the Keys.

Palfrey had reapplied sunscreen and grease to prevent chafing and said the water conditions had been excellent other than the extreme heat on the first two days of the swim. She even spotted a few hammerhead sharks and dolphin pods. Crew members said she was in full control of the effort at the time, instructing team members who are accompanying her on kayaks and a catamaran as she kept up a torrid pace.

She is "physically and mentally strong," Woodburn said on Saturday.

Hours earlier, Woodburn had said the conditions appeared ideal with bathwater-warm waters reported to be calm as the swimmer took aim for the Florida Keys. And the 20-year veteran of distance swimming has been no stranger to jellyfish stings, which forced her to abort two past swims in Hawaii.

Palfrey set off from Havana early Friday. A member of her crew was tweeting to fans, while a webpage updated her location every 10 minutes or so based on data from a GPS device worn by the swimmer.

The daunting effort has been commonly reported as a 103-mile (166-kilometer) swim, however the GPS coordinates suggest it is more like 107 miles (172 kilometer).

Multiple challenges loomed for Palfrey on her second day in the water Saturday, including the prospect of physical and mental fatigue and fending off dehydration, hypothermia and potentially dangerous marine life. At the rate she had been swimming, it had been estimated the crossing would have taken more than 56 hours to complete, slightly above her initial estimates. That would have put her on track for a Florida Keys' arrival sometime on Sunday if she had kept going.

Palfrey had been aiming for the record books to become the first woman to swim from Cuba to the Keys without the aid of a shark cage. Instead she had been relying on equipment that surrounded her with an electrical field to deter the predators. "I'm sure our team will learn from her crossing," one tweet reported. "Just as, I'm sure, Penny's team has learned from Diana's attempts"

Palfrey began the swim in a regular sporting swimsuit, but put on a porous, non-buoyant Lycra bodysuit Friday night to provide cover down to the wrists and ankles to fend off jellyfish stings. But as the sun rose Saturday morning, she changed back to the sport swimsuit.
