Pair of Ky. highway crashes kills 6, injures 5

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) ? Kentucky State Police were investigating whether distracted driving caused a tractor-trailer to plow into an SUV carrying eight people on Saturday, killing six and possibly triggering a serious crash on the opposite side of the highway.

The truck driver is "telling us that he saw the vehicle that was in front of him and he hit the brakes and he didn't hit them in time," Master Trooper Norman Chaffins said. " ... There was a reason for that and we're trying to figure out what the reason was."

The late-morning crash was followed 15 minutes later by a multi-vehicle crash on the opposite side of Interstate 65 that injured three people. The site was just 15 miles from where 11 people died in 2010 when a tractor-trailer crossed the median and hit a van carrying a Mennonite family. Ten people in the van were killed along with the truck driver and the National Transportation Safety Board determined the truck driver was distracted by his cell phone.

Chaffins said despite snow flurries, weather was not a factor in Saturday's crashes. He said police were also looking into the truck driver's logs and had taken blood tests.

The six killed were identified as members of an extended family from Marion, Wis.

They were identified as James Gollnow, 62, and his wife, Barbara Gollnow, 62; Marion Champnise, 92, a friend; Sarina Gollnow, 18, relationship unknown; and foster children Gabriel Zumig, 10, and Soledad Smith, 8.

The two survivors were also foster children. Police identified them as Hope Hoth, 15, who was transported to a hospital in Lexington with burns and a broken spine; and Aidian Ejnik, 12, who was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville with cuts to the back of his head.

Chaffins described both of the children's injuries as non-life-threatening.

The two crashes shut down the busy stretch of highway for about five hours. The first happened at 11:13 a.m. EST on northbound I-65 south of Elizabethtown. In the second crash, four vehicles collided at the same location on the southbound side.

Chaffins said in the first crash, a 1999 Ford Expedition was hit from behind and then hit the car in front of it, but the driver of that vehicle had only minor injuries. He did not know where the Expedition was headed.

The Expedition was "totally engulfed in flames. It was totally destroyed by the fire," he said, adding, "It's just a charred mess."

He said one eyewitness told police two people emerged from the blaze and one appeared to be on fire.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and was cooperating with police, Chaffins said. "He's obviously pretty torn up about everything."

The southbound crash involved a tractor-trailor and three other vehicles. Police were investigating whether rubbernecking was the cause.

"That's what we're suspecting, that people were looking at the crash that happened on the other side and became distracted and caused a chain-reaction crash," he said.

Those injured in the second crash were taken to hospitals but were not identified.

Student attends US Department of Agriculture national forum ...

Murray State recently honored senior agriculture business student, Samantha Anderson, for her invitation to the USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum Student Diversity Program in Arlington, Va., Feb. 21-22.

Anderson was one of 20 students nationwide selected to attend the event.

The students invited to the diversity program were selected based on their responses to an essay on agriculture as a career.

Not only was Anderson the only student selected from Kentucky, but her essay has been posted on the USDA website as one of three examples of a winning essay.

Tony Brannon, dean of the Hutson School of Agriculture, said he is proud of Anderson?s achievements and is glad she was able to represent Murray State.

?For Samantha to be selected for this prestigious conference is a great honor for her, for our school of agriculture and for Murray State,? Brannon said. ?I am especially proud of Samantha not only because she was accepted for the program, but also because her application was posted on the website as the example of a winning essay.

Anderson?s essay discusses growing up on her family?s seventh-generation tobacco farm and about how her family?s business has taught her about responsibility and learning from one?s mistakes. She also discussed today?s many options for those pursuing careers as agriculturists and about how they are no longer limited to production.

Anderson said she is very grateful for her experience at the diversity program, and she encourages future students to take advantage of such an opportunity.

?To represent Murray State and the state of Kentucky at the 2013 Agriculture Outlook Forum was an amazing honor,? Anderson said. ?I am grateful for the experience that I had in Washington D.C., and I hope to see future students at Murray State take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.?

She said the multiple networking opportunities and the education on future trends in agribusiness and agricultural policy were not the only benefits of her experience at the diversity program.

Prior to the forum, the participants in the Student Diversity Program were able to tour a USDA research farm in Beltsville, Md., and hear from speakers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Anderson said she is grateful for all those who have contributed to her success in agriculture. She is also looking forward to seeing how the diversity program will affect her future career in agriculture.

?I am appreciative for those in my life who have encouraged me to succeed at Murray State, especially Brannon, Christy Watkins and Rhea Ann Wright,? Anderson said. ?For my career, being selected allowed me to interact and make contacts with leaders in agriculture policy.?

Communism making comeback in Czech Republic

PRAGUE -- Before the fall of communism, Vaclav Sloup trained the soldiers who caught thousands trying to flee across Czechoslovakia's fortified border to West Germany.

Today, he helps power a Czech Communist Party that has surged to second place in polls, tapping anger over poverty and graft.

When communism collapsed in 1989, the once-dominant party was slow to produce the same kind of reformist wing as emerged in other Eastern European countries. While statues of Lenin have vanished and the party insists it has reformed, its lawmakers still greet one another with "comrade" and maintain hard-line foreign policy views such as leaving NATO.

The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia remains a pariah to many, but it is a pariah commanding 20 percent of the vote.

Sloup's rise to become education councilor in the northern region of Karlovy Vary has aroused protests by students and former dissidents that demonstrate the strength of emotion, but the 63-year-old refuses to quit because of his past.

"I carried out my duties when Europe was divided by an Iron Curtain, and it was in accordance with laws of the time," he said. "I have nothing to be ashamed of."?

However, two Communist councilors, one a former border guard and secret police informant, resigned after demonstrations against the party in Bohemia.

"The Communist Party is anti-democratic," said David Pithart, a 47-year-old environmental consultant, whose father Petr was a leading dissident and served as Czech prime minister in 1990.

"The party doesn't know how to govern any other way," he said while at a protest in Ceske Budejovice in December.?

Second most popular party
The communists have jumped past ruling conservative parties to second place in polls and would be a prospective partner for the poll-leading, center-left Social Democrat Party after a 2014 general election.

Social Democrat leader Bohuslav Sobotka now talks openly about prospects of forming a minority government backed by communists. He wants to avoid a repeat of 2010, when his party won the most votes but could not find a partner that would allow it to form a government.

Any cooperation, however, would require ending a 1995 ban on government-level cooperation with the communists.

The Social Democrats will debate this controversial issue at a national congress March 15-16, and many delegates may yet shrink from any close political contact.

Should they refuse to deal with the communists, the country would most likely face an awkward coalition of left and right parties that could stall policymaking.

Easing the 1995 ban could shift Czech politics to the left, allowing a political consolidation and ending years of unstable rule in which cabinets with a shaky power base have repeatedly been unable to push through their full agenda.

Prime Minister Petr Necas, a center-right politician, has called the Communist Party "unreformable."

The communists' return has given rise to soul-searching for many beyond the ranks of party politics in the central European country of 10.5 million.

In October, the communists won spots on governing councils in the majority of the country's 13 regions in regional elections, gaining 20.4 percent of the overall vote versus 12.3 percent for Necas' Civic Democrats.

Sitting under a portrait of Karl Marx, Communist Party Deputy Chairman Jiri Dolejs said the party had apologized repeatedly for repressions of the communist era,?but may yet need to make another gesture to link up with the Social Democrats.

"We are now the closest to a coalition in 23 years," he said from his office in the party's massive, nondescript headquarters, which sits on Political Prisoners Street.

For some, harsh aspects of communist rule have given way to rosier memories of a system that for all its darker aspects offered job security, cheap housing and low-cost food.

Those memories are growing stronger, especially among retirees and blue-collar workers, as the country suffers the longest recession of its post-communist history, having contracted since mid-2011 because of state spending cuts.

A January survey found that just 46 percent of people felt that today's system was better than communism, a 21-year low.

"After almost a quarter of a century, the (communist) stigmatization is not so strong anymore," said Dolejs, an economist who joined the communists in January 1989.

Eric Holder on how to prevent gun violence

Attorney General Eric Holder says the country is less safe because of the across-the-board spending cuts that go into effect today and that those who claim the administration has been fear mongering about the cuts simply don't have the facts straight.

"This is something that is gonna have an impact on the safety of this country, and anybody who says that that's not true is either lying or saying something that runs contrary to the facts," Holder told ABC in an exclusive interview, pointing out that F.B.I. agents, ATF agents, and prosecutors will be furloughed because of the cuts. "We are gonna be a nation that is gonna be less safe, and that is a simple fact."

The attorney general got emotional when talking about the Newtown tragedy, saying the day he toured Sandy Hook Elementary School after the shooting was his "worst day as attorney general."

"Walking through Sandy Hook Elementary School and going into those classrooms and seeing the caked blood, seeing the crime scene photos of these little angels, was the most difficult thing that I've ever had to do in my professional life."

While Holder says Newtown was a turning point for the administration in taking on gun violence, he thinks the country hasn't done "nearly enough" to combat gun violence.

"10,000, 12,000 people murdered every year. If we had 10,000, 12,000 people who were dying as the result of some other illness, some other common event, we would...devote resources, research to prevent it from happening. And that's with we need to do with this plague of gun violence," says Holder.

Why IT Security Staff Want You to Work at the Office - IT Business Edge

When CEO Marissa Mayer announced she was ending telecommuting at Yahoo, she made an awful lot of people angry. Her reasoning, according to various articles, had to do with bringing the employees together for face-to-face collaborations. However, there may be a lot of IT security professionals who are applauding the decision for another reason.

According to a new report from Imation, IT decision makers have much less confidence in data security when workers are off site, even when the company has strong mobile security policies in place. One of the key findings of the report was this:

The survey asks IT decision makers about their confidence that data is protected from loss or theft while workers are in the office, at home and traveling on the road. The percentage of respondents replying ?extremely confident? or ?very confident? drops as a worker is more ?mobile.? For workers who are in the office, 73 percent of IT decision makers across all geographies are either ?extremely confident? or ?very confident? that data accessed by employees is protected from loss or theft. For employees working at home, that number drops to 55 percent and further still to 47 percent for workers ?on the road.?

However, the mobile workforce isn?t going anywhere. While companies can follow Mayer?s example all they want, employees will still work remotely. They?ll still check email on their smartphones. They?ll log into their home computer to pull together a report.

And the numbers above show that there is still a lot of work to be done to improve security in-house. Seventy-three percent is high, but remember, being confident about security isn?t the same as actual security. After all, how many surveys have we seen where the belief about a company?s security management didn?t match the reality? Taking that into consideration, I would suspect that actual security for mobile devices is much lower than the confidence levels.

So, maybe Marissa Mayer wasn?t off-base with her decision, especially in light of Yahoo?s recent security issues.? Even so, concerns with mobile security are only going to rise. Insisting employees show up at the workplace rather than work from home or the coffee shop isn?t going to stop the way we approach technology. Instead, the time has come to look at the numbers in that survey and figure out why we don?t trust mobile security. Once you understand why, you can start to improve it.

Watch SpaceX Launch Its Second Dragon Supply Mission To The ISS

In what has ended up being a weird couple weeks for Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX founder should have a better day today after the launch of the Dragon capsule on its second resupply mission to the International Space Station. NASA announced that it had approved the mission back on Valentine's Day, mentioning that the spacecraft will be packed with over one ton of experiments and supplies on board. The Dragon Capsule will launch just after 10am Eastern this morning, and the launch is being broadcast live via UStream on NASA's media channel.
