(AP) ? Gunmen wearing military uniforms stopped a convoy of buses in northern Pakistan on Tuesday, ordered selected passengers to get off and then killed 16 of them in a grisly sectarian attack, police and a lawmaker said.

The victims were Shiite Muslims, a minority in Pakistan that is frequently targeted by extremists from the majority Sunni community, said lawmaker Abdul Sattar. The gunmen spared several dozen other people in the four-bus convoy. A spokesman for a faction of the Pakistani Taliban, a Sunni militant group, claimed responsibility for the killings.

The incident in the remote Kohistan region was the latest in a spasm of violence in the country in recent weeks that has demonstrated the resilience of militant networks, including groups allied to al-Qaida. The U.S. has tried to support Pakistani security forces in the fight against the extremists, but strained relations between the two nations hamper cooperation.

The bloody attack took place in the mountainous village of Harban Nala, which is some 210 miles (340 kilometers) north of the capital Islamabad. The area, part of the famed Silk Road linking northern Pakistan to China, is populated by Sunni tribes.

Police officer Mohammad Azhar said the buses were traveling from Rawalpindi to Gilgit when the gunmen attacked.

Sattar, the lawmaker, said eight gunmen were involved in the ambush, and all were wearing military uniforms, presumably to make it easier to stop the buses. He said the attackers ordered the passengers to produce their identity cards before ordering the 16 off the bus and shooting them.

Officials initially said 18 people had been killed and that just one bus was involved.

Sattar and Sher Khan, an official at the Rawalpindi bus station, said attacks had been feared on travelers after an incident last month in which an unknown number of Sunnis were killed in the Gilgit region. Khan said buses were traveling in convoy as a security measure.

Sunni extremists allied to or inspired by al-Qaida and the Taliban routinely attack government and security force targets, as well as religious minorities and other Muslim sects they consider infidels. Most of the violence has been in the northwest, close to Afghanistan, though sectarian attacks happen across the country with some regularity.

Many thousands have been killed in the last five years, and attacks on Shiites ? targeted purely because of their sect ? have been some of the bloodiest.

The Jandullah faction of the Pakistani Taliban ? one of the country's deadliest and best organized militant groups ? claimed responsibility.

"They were Shiite infidels and our mujahedeen shot them dead one by one after bringing them down from a bus," said Ahmed Marwat, a purported commander, who called an Associated Press reporter from an undisclosed location.

Also Tuesday, gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead a Chinese woman and local man in a market in the northwestern city of Peshawar, police officer Tahir Ayub Khan said. He said officers were looking into the motive of the attack.

Do Away With The Disorder And Sit Back And Watch Your Life Improve

Almost all homes in America have got a simple problem that can be solved with a simple solution. It could happen when you?d like to sell your home, relocate to a smaller place or just want to start fresh. What we all need to do every once in a while, is to try to de-clutter their life. How frequently when people move, they want to get rid of everything they no longer need, and they even box it up, but somehow it manages to get transferred with everything else.

You need to check out the items that you don?t really use and get rid of them. Ever think about why it is so difficult to get rid of things, and why it is so hard to get ordered? Is the clutter causing you to feel discouraged and tired? Make up your mind to adopt a day, and de-clutter your lifestyle, and see if it won?t make you feel like a big burden has been removed from your life. To begin with, acquire some boxes and label them storage, donations, garbage, and recycle.

Evaluate all your stuff and give thought to whether or not you still use them then place them into the proper box. If there are goods that you may not use but have special importance, label one of your boxes ?memories? and place it in there. Set the box in the garage, and take a look at it once in a while, until you decide that some things aren?t that important. Maybe you might take a photograph of the things in the box, and keep the photos, but get rid of everything else.

When you get rid of the clutter, and get it out-of-the-way, clean up all over the place as you go. Achieve as much as you possibly can to keep the area clutter-free if not things will start to pile up again.? Make the effort to set things away right after using them. Cleaning up a little bit at the same time will keep things from piling up and building a new mess. Clutter will begin to materialize when you don?t put things away regularly.?Section 21 Notice

Be sure to take only a couple of minutes every day to organize your stuff and put things away. The sole reason a mess gets so unmanageable is because it is able to pile up. It might take hard work to force yourself to be disciplined, but once you get organized, you will realize how nice it is to work in a clean, organized space. Oil prices could hit $150 a barrel if Israel attacks Iran

A jump in energy prices is jamming the slow-turning cogs of an economic recovery in the West, but that may be nothing compared to the economic shock an Israeli attack on Iran would cause.

Oil rose to a 10-month high above $125 a barrel on Friday, prompting responses from policymakers around the world including U.S. President Barack Obama, watching U.S. gasoline prices follow crude to push towards $4 a gallon in an election year.

More related to this story

Europe may have more to fear as its fragile economic growth falters and Greece, Italy and Spain look for alternative sources to the crude they currently import from Iran, where an EU oil embargo, intended to make Iran abandon what the West fears are efforts to develop nuclear weapons, comes into force in June.

In euro terms, Brent crude rose to an all-time high of ?93.60 this week, topping its 2008 record.

?The West?s determination to prevent Iran acquiring nuclear weapons is coming at a price ? a price that might include a second global recession triggered by an oil shock,? said David Hufton from the oil brokerage PVM.

In dollar terms, oil prices are still some $20 a barrel short of their 2008 record of $147. But the latest Reuters monthly survey will on Monday show oil analysts revising up their predictions for Brent crude by $3 since the previous month.

Such a change is big in a poll of over 30 analysts, and last happened at the peak of the Libyan war in May.

Ian Taylor, head of the world?s biggest oil trading house Vitol, told Reuters this week prices could spike as high as $150 a barrel if Iran?s arch-enemy Israel launched a strike at its nuclear facilities ? an option Israel has declined to rule out.

?I used to think this would never happen,? Mr. Taylor said, ?but everyone you speak to says the Israelis will have a go at striking at Iranian nuclear sites.

?The day that happens, you have to believe the Iranians throw a few mines in the Strait of Hormuz and, for a few hours at least or maybe more, I cannot see a scenario where prices would not be at that sort of level ($150).?

The U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Friday Iran had sharply stepped up its uranium enrichment, which Iran insists is solely for civilian purposes.

Israel has warned that, by putting much of its nuclear program underground, Iran is approaching a ?zone of immunity?, but it has also said any decision to attack is ?very far off?.

Wall Street bank Merrill Lynch said this week that oil prices could climb to $200 over the next five years.

So far this year, dollar prices for Brent crude have risen by more than 15 per cent, pushed up mainly by fears about Iran. The loss of supply from three small and mid-sized producers suffering internal turmoil ? Syria, Yemen and South Sudan ? has added to the supply worries.

A stabilization of the U.S. economy may explain some of the rise in oil prices, but the global economy is growing far more slowly now than at this time last year, yet crude prices are just as high.

World equities and oil have typically been closely correlated since 2008 because both were driven by global demand.

However, as oil prices start to respond to supply problems, the correlation is evaporating, and the global economy is already paying a high price.

Data published this week showed unexpectedly weak activity in Europe?s most powerful economy, Germany, and in France, sparking fresh worries that the region could tip into recession.

Few have forgotten that in 2008, within six months of hitting its all-time high, oil plunged as low as $35 a barrel with the onset of the global credit crisis.

In the United States, demand for refined oil products is close to its lowest level in nearly 15 years, indicating that motorists are cutting back their mileage.

?The price spike is going to be a challenge for politicians in the West running for re-election,? said Olivier Jakob from the Petromatrix consultancy.

He said developed countries would find it hard to justify a release of strategic oil stocks similar to what they did in 2011.

Unlike a year ago, when Libyan oil exports were disrupted by a war, this year ?there is ... instead a voluntary restriction on buying from a specific country?, said Mr. Jakob.

Other than a release of oil stocks, developed countries could resort to yet another round of monetary easing, to which emerging markets will respond with quantitative tightening, price controls and subsidies, said analysts from HSBC.

?In terms of fiscal health, it would seem that Asia is better placed than other regions to deal with an oil price shock,? HSBC said in a note last week.

2 U.S. troops killed in Kabul; NATO pulls workers

By Deb Riechmann and Rahim Faiez

ASSOCIATED PRESS

? A gunman killed two American military advisers with shots to the back of the head Saturday inside a heavily guarded ministry building, and NATO ordered military workers out of Afghan ministries as protests raged for a fifth day over the burning of copies of the Quran at a U.S. army base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Interior Ministry attack, saying it was retaliation for the Quran burnings, after the U.S. servicemen ? a lieutenant colonel and a major ? were found dead in an office that only people who know a numerical combination can get into, Afghan and Western officials said.

The top commander of U.S. and NATO forces recalled all international military personnel from the ministries, an unprecedented action in the decade-long war that highlights the growing friction between Afghans and their foreign partners at a critical juncture in the war.

The U.S.-led coalition is trying to mentor and strengthen Afghan security forces so they can lead the fight against the Taliban .

Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak called U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to apologize for the shooting , Pentagon press secretary George Little said .

U.S. officials said they were searching for the assailant .

The American servicemen were found by another foreigner who went into the room, according to the Afghan official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose details about the shootings. They were shot in the back of the head, according to Western officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information. Authorities were poring over security camera video for clues, the Afghan official said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid identified the shooter as one of their sympathizers, Abdul Rahman. He said an accomplice inside the ministry helped Rahman get inside the compound to kill the Americans in retaliation for the Quran burnings.

Little said Wardak indicated that President Hamid Karzai was assembling religious leaders and other senior Afghan officials to take urgent steps to protect coalition forces.

U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, met with Afghan Interior Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi, who offered his condolences and his apologies, Little said.

Afghanistan's interior and defense ministers are expected in Washington this week.

Allen said he recalled all NATO personnel from the ministries "for obvious force protection reasons" but also said the alliance remains committed to its partnership with the Afghan government.

At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul.

Just start looking around and trying to find a project to do around your house. You can also learn how to do projects very easily. Three home improvement projects that will increase your security and the ambience of your home are included in this article.

It really is our pleasure to be able to share so much research on best beat making software. We really had to pare down a lot of content to squeeze so much into this, but we are not done by any means. But be careful about dismissing anything too fast if at first glance it seems like it does not apply to you. Do not make the error of judging too soon, and that is really all we can say about that. It is hardly ever a good idea to maintain a closed mind about anything, and that has served us very well. So just keep going forward with the second part, and there will be more solid information that you can do some good things with.

We have received lots of feedback about it, and one common thing is people easily get overwhelmed with all the information ? but no worries, we know you can handle it with ease. There are quite a few different ways to improve the state of your home, for example with personal safety. Because they slip on the stairs, thousands of people die or are injured every year. If you have a basement in your house, think about installing non-slip adhesive strips to them. At some point or another, we have all observed these and they work quite well, plus they allow for safe footing.

Be sure you place more than one thin strip on each step. We recommend that you set down at least three narrow strips per step, for maximum safety. If you are a parent, then this becomes even more vital for thwarting ghastly falls.

The amount of crime being committed today is a direct result of the state of our economy. So for your first home improvement project, you might want to consider installing a small scale security system. Motion detector lights are one component of the system that you can install outside. Extremely sensitive, motion detector lights will pick up the slightest movement at night outside of your home. By installing a hidden video camera with a remote monitor, you can take images and videos of what is outside. The monitor can then show you what is happening outside. You can view this from any room in your house.

Adding a large basin to your basin can be a great idea. This type of basin is utilized in a variety of functions. This particular sink will provide a variety of uses. Some things are too large for your kitchen sink and will be accommodated by this one. If you take care of your own car repairs, you will probably have greasy hands from time to time; now you will have a safe place to wash them. This installation can actually be a fairly easy job. Because of the ease of this task, you can either do it yourself or hire the job done by a plumber.

Truth be told, we are partial to the home improvement idea of installing an eating bar, as this will make the area more open and seem more spacious. This may seem like a large and strenuous task, although as you have just read there really isn?t much to it. This is how it always seems to be, things around the house generally sound strenuous. Making things simpler for you starts out with obtaining new knowledge and boosting your self-belief.

The feedback about this is typically along the lines of surprise reactions when people read about beat making software, here. You can pick one of the supporting sub-topics and still find even more about this.

Do pay close attention as you begin to move from one topical area to another. Going beyond what has been talked about here, you may want to pick something that appeals to you or is relevant. The hierarchies that are inherent in this will prove to be most enlightening.

You can work with that until you are satisfied and then expand or do the same with another point from this article.

Apple's Unusual Tactics Revealed in iPad Name Dispute

Proview Electronics, the firm trying to stop Apple from using the iPad name in China, has a plausible claimc over the unusual methods Apple used to conceal its identity when attempting to acquire Proview's trademarks, according to several legal experts.

Getty Images

But Apple [AAPL? Loading...? ? ? () ? ] also has some strong defenses against a lawsuit Proview filed last week in California - including the argument that Proview cannot sue Apple, but can only sue the corporation that actually bought the trademarks, the experts said.

Apple announced its iPad tablet computer in January 2010 and the device has become phenomenally popular. During the last 14 weeks of 2011 Apple sold 15.43 million iPads. China represents a potentially huge market for the device.

Proview has sued Apple in China, requesting that sales of Apple's iPads be suspended across the country because of the trademark dispute. Authorities in several Chinese cities, such as Shijiazhuang and Huizhou, have already banned the sale of iPads, citing the legal dispute.

Proview extended the battle to American shores last week by accusing Apple of fraud in a lawsuit filed in a California state court. According to the complaint, Apple's lawyers formed an opaque special purpose entity to buy the iPad trademark.

They also sent an email with the allegedly false promise that the entity would not be competing with Proview, the suit said.

Representatives for Apple did not respond to a request for comment, but the company has said that it bought Proview's worldwide rights to the iPad trademark.

Proview P.R. Boost?

Apple's lawyers called the special purpose entity IP Application Development Limited, and told Proview it wanted the iPad trademark because it was an abbreviation of the company name, according to the lawsuit.

Large companies often use special purpose entities to conceal their identities in trademark negotiations, for fear that the price will skyrocket if they are revealed.

But naming the special purpose entity after the product is unusual, said Martin Schwimmer, a trademark attorney based in New York.

"I have never encountered this level of ruse," Schwimmer said.

While Proview's fraud claim is plausible, Apple has some key defenses, Schwimmer and other experts said. Proview's licensing deal with Apple said that the agreement itself supersedes all prior representations and warranties, according to a copy of the agreement.

Since Proview did not ask for noncompete protections in the contract, then it may not matter what Apple's lawyers said in an email, Schwimmer said.

Apple could also argue that it should not have to defend the lawsuit at all, said Anna Han, a technology licensing professor at Santa Clara University School of Law in Silicon Valley. That is because Proview sold the trademarks to the special entity -? not to Apple, she said.

A Proview spokeswoman could not comment on the litigation.

Proview's parent, Hong Kong-listed Proview International Holdings [0334.HK? Loading...? ? ? () ? ], was the first Taiwanese technology company to list in Hong Kong, and by the end of the 1990s numbered itself among the top five computer monitor makers.

In 1999 it partnered with U.S. chip maker National Semiconductor to launch the I-PAD, a stripped-down desktop computer whose main selling points were its Internet connectivity and ease of use. But Proview had been badly hammered by the financial crisis, and trading of its stock was suspended in Hong Kong in 2010.

Beyond the legal maneuvering with Apple, filing the California lawsuit gives Proview a public relations boost, said Laura Young, a trademark attorney who practices in San Francisco and China.

Lawsuits in China are private, she said, which is not the case in the United States.

"It gets all this bad-smelling stuff out in the public, and that doesn't look good for Apple," Young said.

Should the legal dispute defy settlement, a Proview victory would send a sharp warning to companies about what they say in negotiations over trademarks, Han said. "They would become very cautious," Han said.

The case in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara is Proview Electronics Co. Limited and Proview Technology v. Apple Inc. And IP Application Development Limited, and Does 1-25, 12-cv-219219.

"If there are threats or leads to follow, then the NYPD's job is to do it," Bloomberg said. "The law is pretty clear about what's the requirement, and I think they follow the law. (AP) ? The New York Police Department targeted Muslim mosques with tactics normally reserved for criminal organizations, according to newly obtained police documents that showed police collecting the license plates of worshippers, monitoring them on surveillance cameras and cataloging sermons through a network of informants.

The documents, obtained by The Associated Press, have come to light as the NYPD fends off criticism of its monitoring of Muslim student groups and its cataloging of mosques and Muslim businesses in nearby Newark, N.J.

The NYPD's spokesman, Paul Browne, forcefully defended the legality of those efforts Thursday, telling reporters that its officers may go wherever the public goes and collect intelligence, even outside city limits.

The new documents, prepared for Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, show how the NYPD's roster of paid informants monitored conversations and sermons inside mosques. The records offer the first glimpse of what those informants, known informally as "mosque crawlers," gleaned from inside the houses of worship.

For instance, when a Danish newspaper published inflammatory cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in September 2005, Muslim communities around the world erupted in outrage. Violent mobs took to the streets in the Middle East. A Somali man even broke into the cartoonist's house in Denmark with an ax.

In New York, thousands of miles away, it was a different story. Muslim leaders preached peace and urged people to protest lawfully. Write letters to politicians, they said. Some advocated boycotting Danish products, burning flags and holding rallies.

All of that was permissible under law and protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. All was reported to the NYPD by its mosque crawlers and made its way into police files for Kelly.

"Imam Shamsi Ali brought up the topic of the cartoon, condemning them. He announced a rally that was to take place on Sunday (02/05/06) near the United Nations. He asked that everyone to attend if possible and reminded everyone to keep their poise if they can make it," one report read.

At the Muslim Center of New York in Queens, the report said, "Mohammad Tariq Sherwani led the prayer service and urged those in attendance to participate in a demonstration at the United Nations on Sunday."

When one Muslim leader suggested planning a demonstration, one of the people involved in the discussion about how to get a permit was, in fact, working for the NYPD.

"It seems horrible to me that the NYPD is treating an entire religious community as potential terrorists," said civil rights lawyer Jethro Eisenstein, who reviewed some of the documents and is involved in a decades-old class-action lawsuit against the police department for spying on protesters and political dissidents.

The lawsuit is known as the Handschu case, and a court order in that case governs how the NYPD may collect intelligence.

Eisenstein said the documents prove the NYPD has violated those rules.

"This is a flat-out violation," Eisenstein said. "This is a smoking gun."

Browne, the NYPD spokesman, did not discuss specific investigations Thursday but told reporters that, because of the Handschu case, the NYPD operates under stricter rules than any other department in the country. He said police do not violate those rules.

His statements were intended to calm a controversy over a 2007 operation in which the NYPD mapped and photographed all of Newark's mosques and eavesdropped on Muslim businesses. Newark Mayor Cory Booker said he was never told about the surveillance, which he said offended him.

Booker and his police director accused the NYPD of misleading them by not revealing exactly what they were doing. Had they known, they said it never would have been permitted. But Browne said Newark police were told before and after the operation and knew exactly what it entailed.

Kelly, the police commissioner, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have been emphatic that police only follow legitimate leads of criminal activity and do not conduct preventive surveillance in ethnic communities.

Former and current law enforcement officials either involved in or with direct knowledge of these programs say they did not follow leads. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the secret programs. But the documents support their claims.

The effort highlights one of the most difficult aspects of policing in the age of terrorism. Solving crimes isn't enough; police are expected to identify would-be terrorists and move in before they can attack.

There are no universally agreed upon warning signs for terrorism. Terrorists have used Internet cafes, stayed in hostels, worked out at gyms, visited travel agencies, attended student groups and prayed at mosques. So the NYPD monitored those areas. In doing so, they monitored many innocent people as they went about their daily lives.

Using plainclothes officers from the squad known as the Demographics Unit, police swept Muslim neighborhoods and catalogued the location of mosques. The ethnic makeup of each congregation was logged as police fanned out across the city and outside their jurisdiction, into suburban Long Island and areas of New Jersey.

"African American, Arab, Pakistani," police wrote beneath the photo of one mosque in Newark.

Investigators looked at mosques as the center of Muslim life. All their connections had to be known.

David Cohen, the NYPD's top intelligence officer, wanted a source inside every mosque within a 250-mile radius of New York, current and former officials said. Though the officials said they never managed to reach that goal, documents show the NYPD successfully placed informants or undercovers ? sometimes both ? into mosques from Westchester County, N.Y., to New Jersey.

The NYPD used these sources to get a sense of the sentiment of worshippers whenever an event generated headlines. The goal, former officials said, was to alert police to potential problems before they bubbled up.

Even when it was clear there were no links to terrorism, the mosque informants gave the NYPD the ability to "take the pulse" of the community, as Cohen and other managers put it.

When New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor were killed on Oct. 11, 2006, when their small plane crashed into a Manhattan high-rise apartment, fighter planes were scrambled. Within hours the FBI and Homeland Security Department said it was an accident. Terrorism was ruled out.

Yet for days after the event, the NYPD's mosque crawlers reported to police about what they heard at sermons and among worshippers.

At the Brooklyn Islamic Center, a confidential informant "noted chatter among the regulars expressing relief and thanks to God that the crash was only an accident and not an act of terrorism," one report reads.

"The worshippers made remarks to the effect that 'it better be an accident; we don't need any more heat,'" an undercover officer reported from the Al-Tawheed Islamic Center in Jersey City, N.J.

In some instances, the NYPD put cameras on light poles and trained them on mosques, documents show. Because the cameras were in public space, police didn't need a warrant to conduct the surveillance.

Police also wrote down the license plates of cars in mosque parking lots, documents show. In some instances, police in unmarked cars outfitted with electronic license plate readers would drive down the street and record the plates of everyone parked near the mosque, former officials recalled.

"They're viewing Muslims like they're crazy. They're terrorists. They all must be fanatics," said Abdul Akbar Mohammed, the imam for the past eight years at the Masjid Imam Ali K. Muslim in Newark. "That's not right."

Motorola Cliq 2 to get Gingerbread

Motorola Cliq 2

It's retro week here aet Android Central, first with the Samsung Continuum getting an upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo, and now the Motorola Cliq 2 on T-Mobile. You heard that right. T-Mobile apparently is seeking out 1,000 people who still use the Cliq 2 (and hang out in T-Mobile support forums) to test the upgrade before it goes live to the other four or five people who haven't ditched the device already.

Rolling the Dice on Gaming Stocks - Investment U

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst
Wednesday, February 22, 2012: Issue #1714

Investing in Gaming Stocks

Last week, I spent a few days at a casino resort in California. While I expected the weekend to be busy, I was surprised at how crowded it was on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Every time I set foot into the casino, the place was humming with activity. On several trips to the poker room, tables were full and I had to wait to be seated.

Even at 4:30 AM, as I passed through on the way to Starbucks before catching my ride to the airport, the electronic sounds of slot machines in use filled the room.

The restaurants were always crowded.

Regardless of what you think of the economy, it?s hard to deny that casinos aren?t only surviving, but thriving.

In Las Vegas, gambling revenue was up 5.1% in 2011. Macau, where a lot of American casinos have investments, is even hotter, with revenue soaring 42% in 2011.

Bet With the House

I used to love to gamble. Blackjack was my game. But then I learned how to play poker and the appeal of trying to beat the house vanished. Now, if I lose my money at the poker tables, I can only blame myself (or the superior play of an opponent). The odds aren?t stacked against me from the moment I sit down.

Imagine if you could bet with the house instead of playing against it. Well, you can by investing in the right gaming stocks.

The best way to bet with the house, in my opinion, is Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS). Las Vegas Sands owns the Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas and five properties in Macau, the gambling capital of Asia.

Las Vegas Sands has been coming up in my proprietary S.T.A.R.S. system, ? a stock-picking model that utilizes supercomputing power. The technology behind S.T.A.R.S. was designed by the same programmer who created programs for some of the largest and most successful quantitative hedge funds in the world.

S.T.A.R.S. identified Las Vegas Sands in early January due to its 17.6% annual growth rate in book value and quarterly earnings, which have doubled in the past year. I recommended the stock in The Oxford Systems Trader, my research service that uses S.T.A.R.S., at $48.36. The stock is up 17% since then, although the June calls I recommended at the same time are up 80%. That compares with a 5.5% rise in the S&P 500 during the same period.

Even though we?re already up on the stock, Las Vegas Sands remains my favorite casino stock going forward.

Bet Against the House

Usually, you don?t want to bet against the house. But in one case, a company?s director is. Wynn Resorts (Nasdaq: WYNN) is having a dust-up with a member of its board of directors.

Kazuo Okada, the Director and the company?s largest shareholder, is upset that the company made a $135-million donation to the University of Macau and has asked management for access to the books. Management has refused. Okada is suing the company in order to be allowed to examine the company?s books. And now the SEC is involved, launching an ?informal inquiry? into the donation.

So you have someone on the board of directors who has to sue the company in order to be to allowed to look at the company?s books, and the SEC gets involved. In the financial community, that?s what?s known as ?not good.?

This weekend, Wynn pulled a stunning move, accusing Okada of improper payments to gambling regulators and forcibly buying back his 20% stake in the company at a 30% discount to the market, and asked Mr. Okada to resign.

Okada has vowed to fight the forcible sale of his stock.

It raises a lot of questions. Why would the company not permit one of its own board members to see internal documents? A director is responsible to shareholders. Management has a fiduciary duty to its shareholders. They?re supposed to be on the same team.

Granted, managements and boards don?t always see eye to eye, but the goal should always be enhancing shareholder value.

Something smells rotten here and I think it?s only a matter of time before the whole story gets out. And when it does, I suspect shares of Wynn will be worth a lot less than they are now.

Casino stocks, which have performed nicely since the beginning of the year, should continue to do well as the economy improves. But even with gamblers at the tables, Wynn is likely going to crap out.

Good Investing,

Marc Lichtenfeld

Single atom transistors point to the future of quantum computers, death of Moore's law

Single Atom Transistor
Transistors -- the basic building block of the complex electronic devices around you. Literally billions of them make up that Core i7 in your gaming rig and Moore's law says that number will double every 18 months as they get smaller and smaller. Researchers at the University of New South Wales may have found the limit of this basic computational rule however, by creating the world's first single atom transistor. A single phosphorus atom was placed into a silicon lattice and read with a pair of extremely tiny silicon leads that allowed them to observe both its transistor behavior and its quantum state. Presumably this spells the end of the road for Moore's Law, as it would seem all but impossible to shrink transistors any farther. But, it could also points to a future featuring miniaturized solid-state quantum computers.

(AP) ? A military official says Muslim holy books that were burned in a pile of garbage at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan had been removed from a library at a nearby detention center because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions.

A military official with knowledge of the incident told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it appeared the Qurans and other Islamic readings were being used to fuel extremism, and that detainees apparently were leaving notes for one another inside them.

The official, who did not want his nationality disclosed, spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident.

The top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan says the books were inadvertently given to troops for burning.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? More than 2,000 angry Afghans protested outside an American air base on Tuesday after they learned that copies of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, were burned in a pile of garbage at a sprawling U.S. military base north of Kabul.

"Die, die, foreigners!" the demonstrators shouted. Some fired rifles into the air. Others threw rocks at the gate of the base and set tires ablaze.

The burning of the Quran and other religious books was unintentional, said U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The incident stoked anti-foreign sentiment that already is on the rise after a decade of war in Afghanistan and fueled the arguments of Afghans who claim foreign troops are not respectful of their culture or Islamic religion.

Early Tuesday, as word of the incident spread, about 100 demonstrators gathered outside the sprawling Bagram Air Field in Parwan province. As the crowd grew, so did the outrage.

One protester, Mohammad Hakim, said if U.S. forces can't bring peace to Afghanistan, they should go home.

"They should leave Afghanistan rather than disrespecting our religion, our faith," Hakim said. "They have to leave and if next time they disrespect our religion, we will defend our holy Quran, religion and faith until the last drop of blood has left in our body."

Ahmad Zaki Zahed, chief of the provincial council, said U.S. military officials took him to a burn pit on the base where 60 to 70 books, including Qurans, were recovered. The books were used by detainees once incarcerated at the base, he said.

"Some were all burned. Some were half-burned," Zahed said, adding that he did not know exactly how many Qurans had been burned.

Zahed said five Afghans working at the pit told him that the religious books were in the garbage that two soldiers with the U.S.-led coalition transported to the pit in a truck late Monday night. When they realized the books were in the trash, the laborers quickly worked to recover them, he said.

"The laborers there showed me how their fingers were burned when they took the books out of the fire," he said.

In a statement, Allen said he had ordered an investigation and offered his apologies to the president and people of Afghanistan. He thanked local Afghan workers "who helped us identify the error, and who worked with us to immediately take corrective action."

"We are thoroughly investigating the incident and are taking steps to ensure this does not ever happen again," Allen said. "I assure you, I promise you, this was not intentional in any way."

Afghan Army Gen. Abdul Jalil Rahimi, the commander of a military coordination office in the province, said he and other officials met with protesters, tribal elders and clerics to try to calm their emotional response. "The protesters were very angry and didn't want to end their protest," he said.

Later, however, the protesters ended the rally and said they would send 20 representatives from the group to Kabul to talk with Afghan parliamentarians and demanded a meeting with President Hamid Karzai, Rahimi said.

The governor's office in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan called the incident a "shameful move by some stupid individuals."

Zia Ul Rahman, deputy provincial police chief, said between 2,000 and 2,500 protesters demonstrated at the base.

"The people are very angry. The mood is very negative," Rahman said while the rally was going on. "Some are firing hunting guns in the air, but there have been no casualties."

Police said a similar protest on Tuesday just east of Kabul ended peacefully.

In April 2011, Afghans protesting the burning of a Quran by a Florida pastor turned deadly when gunmen in the crowd stormed a U.N. compound in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif and killed three staffers and four Nepalese guards.

Separately, officials in Helmand province in the south said insurgents beheaded four people Sunday night in Washer district on the charge that they were spies.

"The militants told the local people that they were guilty because they were carrying satellite phones," provincial spokesman Daoud Ahmadi said.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said that the militant group was not involved in the killings.

Also in the south, a NATO service member died Tuesday as a result of a non-battle related injury. The U.S. led coalition gave no further details about the death. So far this year, 44 NATO service members have been killed in Afghanistan.
