Carnage is a razor sharp black comedy that centres on parenting differences, starring Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet.
?Directed by Roman Polanski (a director who is no stranger to controversy), the story follows the events of an afternoon where two sets of parents attempt to hold a civilized meeting to discuss a playground incident involving their sons.
What results is an outstanding look at human interaction and a hilarious descent into chaos
You feel as if you?ve actually walked in on a messy situation and you?re drawn in immediately despite yourself right from the beginning.
The film makes an excellent comment on human?s social ?acting? versus the inevitable reality when we are pushed to behave how we would instinctually.?
The fact that it's in real time (meaning that the story unfolds exactly as it's happening) means that you are instantly given that fly-on-the-wall feel, as if you were another person calming watching from a chair in the corner.
The most fascinating thing about this is that you get the chance to witness the complete unravelling of each character as the film goes on and each character has their moment to do just that.
A workaholic father and a self-righteous liberal thinker
A workaholic father and a self-righteous liberal thinker are just two recognizable modern personalities that are expertly crafted.
The chaos and emotion that heightens subtly, yet noticeably, is an incredibly well constructed character sketch featuring some well-known modern personality types.
All four members of the cast give outstanding performances, managing to convey both the polite restricted initial interaction and the following descent into chaos with an amazingly natural ease. I am truly stunned that this movie didn?t manage to obtain an Oscar nod.
A snapshot of modern life and a realistic look at parenting today
Carnage is a snapshot of modern life as well as an incredibly humorous and realistic look at parenting today.
It highlights various parenting approaches as well as giving a fairly honest and open account of the way in which parents today weather the storms of parenting and interact with other parents; all whilst trying to keep a handle on their own relationships and keep in touch with their children?s lives.
Above all it?s funny and completely believable, and it gives all four of the actors a chance to really show off their incredible talents. As the old saying goes ?it's funny because it's true? and this could not be more appropriate in this film.
